hey yall, i thunk up some more questions about making my rusty 74 and my solid 72 into one car, sorry theres a bunch...

-is the windshield from a 74 standard the same as a 72 super(cracked)?
-is the rear seat backrest/parcel shelf the same from 74std to 72spr(missing)?
-do yall know what parts i need to change to swap a 74 autostick engine with a 72 manual engine(slop)? (i think the oil pump and starter are different)
-i saw theres 2 fans right behind the slotted front apron, are those for the regular 2-spd fan or did my car have a/c? (i found a "temp" dash knob when i was cleaning it out but theres no other a/c parts)

thanks again,
john

Yes windshield are the same, cut it out of the seal & use a new seal.
Yes supers & standards from doors back.
I'm not clear if you want a standard shift engine in a Autostick car or what?
So:
Autostick engine into manual car.
Don't worry about starter, need flywheel , need oil pump & cover.
When you change flywheel, you must set the endplay on crank.
Manual engine into Autostick car
Don't worry about starter.
Need torqueplate, and dual pump&cover from Auto stick car.
When you install torqueplate, you must set crankshaft endplay.
If I had a Solid Autostick car, and a manual parts car, I would rob the
manual parts to make the Autostick car a manual car. Just look for the
clutch cable tube, if the Autostick's pan has one, than doing this swap is
a simple matter of swapping parts. You got a 50-50 chance of the tube
being there on a '72 pan.
Yes your car at one point had A/C, If the motor's left heater hose goes off
at a odd angle to left, than you still even have the fanshoud for the a/c.
A/C was dealer installed, and the condensor is mounted in this area after
unbolting and removing the crushform bolted to the framehead.
Good Luck, I loved the '72 Super I had.

74 super windshield was curved, 72 wasnt, those shouldnt be interchangable. may the 74 be a standard?

hey thanks for the help yall,
as with any of my own projects, and im hoping other ac/vw owners, there has been lots of goin back to the drawing board on this pennywise restoration. by the way, any other folks in new orleans out there?

al,
i have a rusty 74/std/autostick parts car that runs, and a solid 72/super/manual with a sloppy engine that im combining (for times sake). im gonna swap the running autostick engine for the sloppy super engine. so it sounds like all i have to remove from each engine is the oil pumps&covers and flywheel/torqconv?

i was fearing that the whole engine cases were different or somethin. im glad now, because each car is mechanically complete and im *eventually* gonna restore the rusty, soon to be non-running, 74 parts car. which is kinda like gettin that big ole operation for my 13 year old dog, it didnt make sense, but i couldnt stand the alternative. anyway, i plan to go german-look using mostly oem parts in the super, and full-stock on the 74... thanks, john
