click here --> Split bus VIN check <--
There you can put your VIN and obtain month and year of production. It is written only in english for all VW people around the VWWorld!!!

There's lot of work in progress. I want to put articles, Italian user manual and many more. But NO forums and other things already well done by TheSamba web site :D :D

Yes! you're right. The sistem have one month of possible failure, expecially for USA market. I used the same tables you can find here on the samba, but I think that USA market have a different 'offset' of production date, in particular for serial number close to end of the month.

I invite every one to test it and tell me if there's moe than one month of difference!

thank you.

Well.... I have to insert bay windows yet, but for split buses I coverved all the production figures (from 1950 to July 1967).
For model year 1965 and above, it shuld work in automatic for different chassis number prefix (2x5, 2x6 and 2x7). If not just tell me the suffix in wich it didn't worked even in pvt.
thanx

I could have entered the wrong numbers by accident. I will have to take a look at the VIN number when I get home, I just used some numbers that I beleived to be the VIN that a fellow Sambanista posted on my thread where I was asking about my M-codes.

NorCalWeekender Fri Mar 30, 2007 11:41 am

Nailed January of 67 for me. :)

RobzKombi Fri Mar 30, 2007 6:48 pm

Ok got the correct numbers in and this is what it comes out to be

Built on: October 1964

I always thought it was a Nov bus only because on my M-code plate it has
"02 N" . Doesn't that mean it was built on Nov. 2nd? and would the Oct. 64 date still make it a 1965 model?

need Sat Mar 31, 2007 6:36 am

yes 02 November probably is the right prod date: this because the system can't be so accurate for cars builted closer to end of the month. But it is always model year 1965.

June 1960 for my SC Very nice!

Hit mine on the head: 1070345-feb 63, which jibes with the birth certificate. good work.

Well the method to calculate the birth is an automatic interpolation of everyone usually did manually with the FAMOUS booklet 'Beetle age Finder' + 'Type 2 / 3 age finder' in which are showed the last chassis per month of:
type 1 from 1940 to 1979.
type 2 from 1950 to 1968.
type 3 from 1961 to 1968.

for type 2 and type 3 seveties production figures I'm compiling a spreadsheet with 'samples', and soon I will activate a quite accurate sample method!

What really is very difficoult to find is 1980 and above mexico/brazilian production figures.
May be I am interested because here in Europe, we imported vw mexico beetles, officially, until 1986, with special model 50 jhare käfer!
The chassis number are the standard 17 digits with a particular model year that 'joins' old code with the new one!!!
m.y. 1979 convertile chassis n° 159 2 0XXXXX (available also in USA)
m.y. 1979 sedan chassis n° 119 2 1XXXXX (not available in USA) (**)

m.y. 1980 sedan 11AXXXXXX (not available in USA)
m.y. 1981 sedan wvwzzz11zBmXXXXXX (not available in USA)
m.y. 1982 sedan wvwzzz11zCmXXXXXX (not available in USA)
m.y. 1983 sedan wvwzzz11zDmXXXXXX (not available in USA)
m.y. 1984 sedan wvwzzz11zEmXXXXXX (not available in USA)
and so on....

In 1980/1981, when universal standard 17 VIN started VW sent in Europe beetles migrating digit's m.y. from '9' to 'A' with the classical 9/10 digit. In the following 1981, when 17 digits appear, if you check the letters in capital, it 's a continous 'serial numbering' convetion (sorry for my bad english!) 11 B XXXXX, then C for m.y. 1982 and so on.

So from m.y. 1965 to m.y. 2004 there is a contiuons serial n° convetion!!!
5,6,7,8,9,02,12,22,32,42,52,62,72,82,92,A,B,C,D,.....,Y,1,2,3,4 !!!!
Ok.... anyone can help me to figure out mex and brazilian birth check month by month

European car VIN must be a 17 values as well as every car in the world, but they usually put '0' or 'z' because it is not mandatory to compile 'model type' 'check digits' and all specifications of 17 VIN codes.

Let's take a look at south america last beetles.
I.E.
This is an 'Ultima ediction' checked VIN m.y. 2004 (found it on ebay!!there's is no 'z' code)

3VWS1A1B54M9004776
3VW - VW of Mexico (A funny thing that 'mexico' beetles imported in Europe -- see above -- until 1986 have a different suffix: 'WVW' that means Germany manufacter VW!!.... even we knew it is builted in Mexico!!!!!!)
S1A1B - type 1 etc..
5 - check digit
4 - m.y. 2004
M - Puebla Mexico
9 - Suffix of the s/n
04776 - serial number

OR I.E.
This is a 'Fusca do Brazil' checked VIN m.y. 1996 'ultima ed. brasileira!!'(with some 'z' digits!)
9BWZZZ113SP002232

9BW - VW do Brasil
ZZZ - Filling codes
113S - Type 1 etc..
S - m.y. 1996
P - San Paolo plant (or similar don't know exactly)
002232 - serial number.

Okei: anyone that can help me to find prod figures divied by month to compile all the HISTORY of more than 21,5 milion of beetles produces.
The same stands for type 2, builted in Mexico as well as in Brazil!!!!

Hope you enjoed my 'little article'
Let me know...

(**) I noticed that, until 1978 type 1 sedan/super beetle and type 1 convertible, apart the different suffix (11x 13x and 15x) shared a common and continuos serial number. For model year 1979 we have a 'single' year in which sedan have been built in mexico and convertible in germany, and after 119 2 /159 2 suffix, sedan cars start with '1' and convertible start with '0'. Some kind of basic difference to avoid same serial number apart suffix!!!!

Tried your calculator, with the following info, as on the plate at the back of the front passenger seat:

214B EA001 6604
9-00/68
2051 002 240

and no matter the combo i tried, nothing seemed to work - any ideas?
