Hi Gang,
I got to hand crank start the 1200 motor on my '58 SC (Ruff) today.

We did a little creative cutting with the plasma cutter on the tin below the crank pulley for the hole.

There was a VW crank handle that was missing the cross pin up front in the storage compartment that came with the SC.

I MIG welded a 8mm bolt across and cut it to lenght.

One flip and Ruff was purring- sweet

I find that non-VW people are quite impressed by hand crank starting a bus. especially when you happen to have stalled in the middle of an intersection, and have procrastinated replacing the electric starter. (only happened once.)

are there re pops available for them? My '59 DC has the apron but I haven't looked into it just thinking that it was an impossibility. I'm guessing they aren't that complicated but don't see many of them in my neck of the woods.

originals are readily available. search the classifieds. crank handles run about $75. nuts run about $25.

If you have a '59, make sure you get a '59 handle, it's longer to clear the larger rear bumper.

The subtleties never end! I have bought two handles for pre 59 buses and I bet both are long versions.

the long versions are rare. I am not convinced that they used them for the whole year in '59. I see one long one for every 20 or so normal ones. I have pulled a normal one out of a later bumper '59.

if someone were to use a cordless drill, a rubber tubing that fits the generator nut, but can break free ... Does anyone feel it's possible to emergency start a non crank start equipped bus this way?

you could make your own crank if you had an og to copy. a few bends with a torch for the shaft, and drill the end for the proper sized cross pin, sounds pretty simple.
maybee someone can post some measurments of their crank

I can't mod my bus, Jdot took away my drill. :)
Just wondering if that might work for a portable 'bus starter'. Always one at a show that needs a push...

here is what happens when you collect too many 36hp buses...

some of the jacks are extras, but all the hand cranks go to buses that I have in my collection.

Personally, I doubt it has enough power plus the gen nut area is too fragile.

oorwullie,
the length of the hand crank shaft I have is 280mm(11") from the "vertical" section of the handle to the working end

I'd like to also find out the longer hand crank shaft length as the only rear bumper I have is a 1964 deluxe bumper.
It looks like I can't use the handle we have when the bumper is mounted.

Sure, the Things had them on a 1600.
For kicks I installed the crank stuff on my 1776. Works great.

agreed, better to push... if there is no crank.

I wish they would have kept that feature.

I have NOS pulley nuts on my two 126a engines these are available if anyone needs them along with the double pulleys and rest of the genny kit.
