It appears that my belt is not aligned properly. When standing to the side of the engine, the pulley on the generator is sticking out farther than the crank pulley by about 3/8 of an inch which is causing my belt to wear. Is there a way to align by sliding my generator in more, or adding shims to my crank pulley to bring it out.
Any help would be appreciated |

You may have the wrong generator and or tin on your engine... first things first find the #'s on the gen and see if the out-put says "38 amps"
if so someone put a short production run (69-71, I think) generator on your engine at some point in time.
there is no way to move the gen that far for a "quick fix" . post back what you find and we can go from there... |

The generator says 14V 30A. What happened was I had a 1915 motor built and the guy used my old generator. He put all new tin, new crank pulley, etc. but reused my old generator. |

well then there goes my therory! LOL... try loosening the Gen. holdown strap up and giving the whole gen/fan housing assembly a shove, since it is sticking out too far. but 3/8 is alot... do you have any funky "dress up" backing plate items and chrome pulley's aftermarket tin/ fan housings etc. on this engine or is it stock tin??? |

I think the tin is stock. All new but stock. The gen pulley is what was on there before, the only thing different is the crank pulley. It is aluminum with degree markings. I did try to loosen the pulley strap a tap it with a rubber mallet, but it wouldn't budge. |

Only thing I can think of without seeing it with my own eyes is that the crank pully may not be dirfted onot the crank far enough... sometimes due to quality control the inner I. D. of the pully will cause it to bind up before it slides onto the crank all the way... take the crank pulley nut off and look, the pulley should only show maybe 1/8 at the most before the nose of the crankshaft or should be close to flush... if it is not then you may have found the trouble. good luck! |
