an autostick is just what it means part automatic part stick. It consists of a vacuum servo(air tank on the left most side of the engine) a automatic traqnsimission and no clutch pedal. The way it shifts is... you have park neutral 3 forward gears and one reverse and it looks and shifts like a 4 speed. If is perfect for someone who doesn't know how to drive a stick. Without a clutch pedal it uses vacuum to move the clutch in and out when you change gears. Like i said it is best to learn how to drive a stick so you learn the shift pattern.
My first bug was an autostick SuperBeetle and it was good but also had it's problems. LIke i said ituses vacuum to shift and the vacuum tank has 2 wires on it. One night about 9 p.m. i was about 2 miles from home when the car wouldn't shift anymore. turned out one of those two wires was cut. found that out after leaving it over night in a parking lot and getting it towed to my mechanic.
Hope this helps

I have an autostick, andit is fun to drive around in. There is no clutch, and 3 gears and a reverse. The funny thing is, once in gear, do not touch the shift lever or you will just hop around. Hold the stick down or further past a gear a bit is like pushing in the clutch. So far I haven't had the electrical problem described above, only a starter problem. I like watching peoples faces that I drive around when they see me shifting and not using or having a clutch.

If anyone is interested I have an original VW traing poster with a complete schematic of the auto stick that I would like to sell. This poster came out of a VW warehouse/training site that burned down in 1971. I can send digital pictures to interested parties who reply to [email protected]
