Mine has the round seal on the gas door, , six leg middle seat - but later floor mat, early steering gear, early decklid , early battery tray, and a strange mix of window glass with early and later logos . narrow front bumper license plate area, 4 part doglegs, later vent screen .

what's your vin? ( i feel like i asked you this before, but...)
what makes the steering gear "early"?
what makes the battery tray "early"?
got pics? i'd like to compare to my 2/56/

my 2/56 has all glass logos the same, and i am pretty darn certain they are all original to the bus:

and even the dots are all the same except for the front slider windows (which match eachother, dot under the S rather than the E), and the rear glass which has no dots.

My chassies# 162436(That makes it january)
It has the round top wing latch tabs,
if you look at the battery tray it is one piece of tin along with the piece that holds the rubber engine seal . On later busses it is two seprate pieces.
The window glass is weird ... The side glass ( all door and pop outs) too) have the same logo you posted but the sky lights, corner glass and back door glass have the early two line marking as a 55 would have .
My wing nut air cleaner has three radial indentations outside the center circle... is this correct?

mike it looks like we have a very close match

i always wondered how close your bus was to mine...

what is your body#?( the number on the front of the bulk head?)
do you still have the orignal motor ?

mine came with a factory installed ambulabnce step as well
Did yours have any orignal options?
Dours looks like an american spec bus too ... where was it sold? found? how complete is it? It is amazing that both of these survived .... likely they were comming down the line very near each other ... when you consider how few sambas were produced in '56 they may have been consecutive cars . Mine was sold new through a dealership in Coose Bay, Or , ...Five Star Motors.

My October '55 bus had aluminum domelights originally. I'm certain they are correct.

Here's a 55 deluxe completely original. vin#20141121 It has 48,278 original miles. I know nothing has been changed on this bus. I have not looked at a lot of the changes you have mentioned on non-barndoors but if there is anything you need a picture of let me know. Maybe this can answer some of the questions.

I have one question, what would be the correct front and rear bumper for this bus? I do have the front but I don't know if it's correct. I will post a picture.
Thanks

gatorwyatt Sun Apr 15, 2007 6:54 pm

rear is a regular bus pressed bumper painted red with trim and the frt is a pressed bumper also painted red with a smaller distance between the pressing for a licsense plate.

Now that I`ve been watching this post. I have a 59 panel in the backyard that I`m hoping to get to this year. Just a few things that I have learned that are not like my 65 sc are body parts. Rear wheelwells which have been cut and doglegs still good. It still has the 36hp engine and crankstart and I think that was the last year for that. And I`ve been told the shifter is closer to the seat. A 59 maybe to new for this post but this 59 is all new to me. Is there anything else that I should know about? Brakes ect.
