Does anyone have access to a 996 engine? Ideally it would be a twin turbo, but even NA woulod be helpful. I am trying to figure out if a 996TT would fit in the back of my Ghia as an ultimate project to keep me busy for the next 10 years or so.

wat is a 996? I put a 912 in a '78 Super Beatle Convettable. Its like having a super motor but it idols & drives like a dailey driver. 34 MPG and the only drawback is if you drive under 50 mph you need to run in 3rd gear cause it's unhappy under 2800 rpm (running down the road). If VW was building these they could'nt build enough. I got a '68 Karman Ghia that I'm putting my other 912 in someday.

With some cutting, it may fit, but a 996 engine is taller, wider, and much heavier than a Type 1, or even a Porsche flat 6. You'll have to worry about the cooling system, having the starter on the engine, and the odd-ball transmission bolt pattern too.

992 is the "first gen" of the watercooled Porsche 911s... there was 996 then 997

Not quite, the 993 was the last air cooled engine. The 996 was the first water pumper. There was no 992 designation.

Didn't some 993 engine have water cooled heads though?

No, only the 959 had water cooled heads (to accommodate 4 valves) and an air cooled block on a production Porsche. The 993 was all air.

I own a 996TT, and I had a 996 engine on my work bench for a while...
What would you like to know ?

In addition to what Porsche 930 dude said re: 959
the 996 GT3 uses a 964 crank housing
cylinders and heads are water cooled

I am looking for the overall package dimensions of the TT engine, sans the intercoolers (length, width, height). Thanks Q.

hmmmm :? a little hard to measure insitu, but leave it with me.
I will grab a tape measure....

The switch to water cooling had to do with meeting ever-tightening emission requirements.

Figures... How have the water-cooled porsches panned out compared to the air cooled???

Liquid cooling also allows Porsche to turn out incredible power figures. The last of the 993 Turbo engines could be counted on for something like 420hp, but the newest motors can provide somethign like 490hp. I'd say liquid cooling compares pretty good; more power and better emissions.

Yea, but look how much those things weigh. Seems everyone these days can't do without the latest gizmo/tech thing on their cars. They don't drive them, they are just in it for status/comfort/being seen. I mean, power steering and power brakes, with ABS no less. Just stand on them......don't think how to avoid anything.......mindless driving.....I see it everyday down here, and not just from 'older snowbirds and teenie boppers', but from the 30-40 somethings with cell's not paying attention in their Cayenne's!!!

The older aircooled are just 'better' in my view. However, no one will ever go back, so that makes the 'aircooled' appreciate in value more and more every year. 8)
