Anyone seen these tailights before?
The pattern in the glass is different than the usual snow flake tail lights.
The housing and the reflector have VW part numbers on them.

Could this be the lens of the infamous "M 018 - Cannot be identified" code that everyone says indicates "oversized reflectors in tail lights?"
I still wonder about this because I have that code but not these tail lights. I guess that assumes my tail lights are original to the car, but I'm pretty comfortable with that assumption based on the history of the car.

Im almost certain I had one of those that came with my 58 vert. THere was a box with 5 or 6 56-61 tail lights in it. One was different, and if i remember right it was that same pattern. I will look for some pics! |

I've seen 4 different styles of 1956-61 taillight lenses. Besides the two shown in this thread, the 3rd being the regular style. The 4th resembles that of the Chevron logo |

Here in the US, one of the larger fuel dealers is Chevron Gasoline. |

It looks like this:
I haven't seen the tail lights but I think it's safe to assume they only have the two downward arrows and not the logo w/ name. :D |

This guy has done a great job on a 50+ year old car in a country that was until relatively recently speaking, behind the Iron Curtain. Cars were scarce and run into the ground over there, and also kept alive with later wings, engines, boxes, rear screens etc. The weather there is harsh for cars, hence why no-one ever drags rust free examples of early VW iron out of Eastern Europe. Finds tend to come from either the colder Scandinavia where rust stops in winter because the air is too cold for moisture, or from Cal/Arizona etc, where htere is no moisture period.
W lids and oval lights will be rare over there and it was his choice whether to put the car out with a V lid and mismatched tail lights, or wait for ages until he found the right parts and or the money. Personally I'd do the same as he has.
Give the guy a break and consider the international nature of this forum. Not all of us are loaded and living in California, but we do all have the same love. |

I'll give it to you on the decklid, but having two different taillights is a different story... Getting one matching taillight will set you back, what, $50? |

C'mon now, it rains 4-5 times a year here in Southern California. A few more days if you head up to Northern Cal. :D |
