Well, I bought my Thing about this time last year but other than some neighborhood driving, it hasn't been used. One of the key parts I've been needing was an exhaust system to replace the rusted out beetle exhaust that was on it when I purchased the car. At any rate, I order it last week and it came in yesterday so I put it on right away. I've got to say my initial impression of it is very good. It's a little louder than I'd prefer but I knew it would probably be that way from what I'd read. I definitely prefer the low tone to it though over the regular beetle exhaust that is on my brother's Thing.

Now as soon as I can get the e-brake working and figure out whatever the problem is with my turn signal assembly she'll be ready for some summer driving.

Are you using after-market J-tubes? I have never seen J-tubes with what appear to be heat dissipation fins on them before. I have a '74 with heater boxes, and just assumed that '73s came with straight J-tubes.

Just curious.

Nah, that's what's left of a heater box after you take an air chisel to them :wink:
The exhaust was rusted out when I got it. I need to buy new j-tubes or heater boxes, but for the time being, I ripped the old heater boxes apart and welded up the couple holes that were in them.

Also remember that we were offered a very good price on a group buy for 10 of these tri-mils. I am in for one and Baja wants one. The price offered is way less than the ISP price.

Ahhhh, the old "air chisel gambit". I like that "one off" look.

On my '74 I've got the same exhaust and went with the matching ceramic coated heater boxes. I forgot where I bought them, but I know that ISP sells those too.

Group buy for ten is $215 ceramic coated and shipped

I have been told that ISP gets more than $300 plus shipping.

I want one for for the 1776 that I am about to build. Hence the group buy effort..

Thanks for the post on the costs. That is good to know. I did not have that exact info prior to your post. I was just reprimanded by "Super Samba" for posting prices because they feel it appeared I was advertising in the incorrect area of Samba. Still the shipped group buy price is a savings to ten Thing owners if we had 10 such folks to take advantage of the offer.

Eventually I plan to get some new ceramic coated heater boxes as well. Just trying to get the old girl running for now. Funds are a bit limited since I decided on a career change a couple years ago and have returned to school.

----Also... neither system is a "Tri-Mill", all Tri-Mill systems have welded on ID tags.

Actually, those two links are right where I bought my exhaust from the same seller. I see what you mean that their pictures on the auction don't have the tri-mill ID tag on it, but when I received it, it does.

I bought the ceramic coated exhaust on ebay for $275 or so. Just under $300 delivered.

Great. Groovy. Solid build, exits through rear bumper nicely.

No muss or tripping over some pipe jutting from the rear.

all the ones we sell are genuine tri-mil, I have yet to see a copy of this system from anyone,

the photos show the first production run of these before tri-mil tagged them

I'd say tri-mil did not put a tag on these until about a year later after they came out

we were the 1st with these from tri-mil as we worked with them updating a system for type 3 at the same time they put these in production

Well, I picked up a copy of this exhaust. I like the compactness and the exit through the bumper. The fact that it sits inside the exterior plane of the vehicle is a bonus too!(I bumped my shin on plenty of stingers over the years).
So, my first thoughts are that it's loud. It's got a great Low tone, but it almost seems as if there is No packing in the muffler can(sounds kinda "tinny"). I will give it a few more miles to see how things turn out, but at this point I can see a different system in my future. I may save this one for the Volks-truck i'm planning.

I too just bought one. I got a new engine and got the straight tubes. Perhaps somebody can advise me, but does the rear bumper have to come off to put the ends in? Does the J-tube (male) go staight into the muffler wtih out any gaskets? One more thing what is ISP? Mighty obliged. Thanks

My rear bumper had to be off, but it's a custom built narrower boxed unit, where the stocker is a "c" channel.
Can't answer on the Jtube, never used them...
ISP stands for Internet Service Provider..... er...uh... I mean, It's a VW parts supply company... ISP West

And you're welcome!! Make sure you update on whether the stock bumper must be removed. I'm guessing not.
