Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I kyped the photo from somewhere on the internet - the color was what I wanted and the body style was right - I got my son to graft on the one-piece headlights and the VW Baja wheels (I have a set of 5), and he 'painted' the bumpers for me, too.
Somewhat humorous background story to this car. I have a pair of the one-piece headlights that I acquired on a trip to Germany in the late Eighties (I might have paid 10 Marks at the wrecking yard where I found them). At the time, I didn't have a 411. Consequently, I can joke that I bought a car to fit some headlights I had on hand (sort of like a lyric from Haywire Mac's "The Bum Song No. 2" where he says, "I've got a button here lady; could you sew a shirt on it for me?")
Sorry to say that the 411 is 'project #2' after an Acapulco Thing restoration. I have been acquiring other parts, though:
Euro front turn signals (like in the photo - don't wrap around the side so far)
NOS amber rear turn signal lenses
NOS brake/tail/backup lenses
NOS shocks, struts, & steering damper
NOS Master cylinder, Clutch master, & Clutch slave
Rebuilt disc calipers
NOS Balljoints
NOS wiper arms
Km Speedo
Clock with gas heater timer
Premium IV radio (Mk IV Jetta/Golf) with Phatbox
My 'modest' plans include completely rebuilding the engine, using oversize P&Cs and adding hydraulic lifters, and renewing as much as possible the 4 speed manual transmission. I hope to do essentially a complete restoration-quality job including a major tear down of the body so that everything can be painted inside and out.
Wish me luck as I'm not getting any younger! |

Thank you...
I'd like to trade for something valued @ $4k if poss.
I'd also take the same cash amt.
I just bought a Bus, so money's tight, but if I can make it trhough W/O selling it I plan to keep it.
If I do sell it I'd look to get another someday, but they're hard to find in nice shape unfortunately.... |

Well, you have a very unique Vee-dub, Type 4 that is. If I had enough money, why not. But, I am still completing my Type 3 Fasty. But in the future, I am thinking of buying a Type 4. Another Vee-dub style. Very cool, indeed. |

Like I said, I was always curious about the Type IV's, but never gave it much thought to owning one, but then I lucked into this car...
All I can say is they grow on you bigtime!!
Funny thing too is I really don't know what I'd want to trade for...
I have a real softspot for Swallowtail Rabbits and split Buses...
I like the car better than most anything anybody could offer me, so it looks like I'm gonna keep it.....even if it takes me a few years to get it restored to top notch it'll be worth it in the long run. |
