Sorry if it's been asked before.
The spring loaded arm that goes from the generator strap down to hold the oil filler in place.
I noticed on a '48 the other day it was not fitted(think this was the first year the mushroom cap stopped)then looking at a very original '51 and it was.
When did this arm first appear?
I have managed to finally obtain the correct oil filler for my December '50 car,should i have the arm or not.
The only post i could find said not fitted until '51.What is correct please.

That was the post i had found,unfortunately nothing cast iron there.
But your info from PR says Dec '50 no arm am i right?

Yes, no arm for DEC 50.
01 AUG 51 is the start of the arm.

Hmm, should I take the one off my Nov '50 split then? Seriously, will the filler jostle out on its own if I do???

Exactly my thoughts John.
On my '47 it has the Mushroom cap and that is an extremely good fit.
But looking on the '50 i think it's just going to rattle about.
Is there a seal or rubber "O" ring listed in any parts lists,Anyone?

This seal is made for oil filler cap.

I'll have to look and see if there is a groove in there, I coul dprobabl y get a generic O ring to work.

Once I added some oil and left the filler out and drove the car. On dips in the road I kept hearing some metal scraping/rattling. Guess what, the end of the road draft tube was hanging down far enough it was scraping the road when the ground clearance decreased enough!!

The rubber ring above doesn't function as a tensioning part, that part carries through early oval cars. It functions more as a anti-contaminant seal, and perhaps as a slight cushion and spacer to prevent metal to metal contact/noise . The thin wall throat with fits into the filler hole in the stand can be expanded to form a rather tight fit to address most of the jostling concern that is if you want your 50 to be technically correct. VW certainly added the tension clamp for a reason however, things just loosen up from road vibration, and was just an inexpenisve anti-nuisance device as I see it that made sense.

I've been driving mine around without the oil filler strap for the last 5 months without any problems. The oil filler fits snugly into the case. I checked last night and it is still snug.

Wolfsburg West sells these rubber rings, and if you have standard set of hole punches you can make your own too.

It is not only a ring, it has cone form. I have nos for sale if interested.

True, it has a beveled edge at its face and cannot be made out of sheet rubber alone.

In my experience on my Barndoor Kombi a rubber ring in good shape is necessary to prevent a minor oil drip from the oil filler. I remember my oil filler not having that tight of a fit so that may have been an issue as well.

True, it has a beveled edge at its face and cannot be made out of sheet rubber alone.

I've made them here no problem, the issue is having 3/16 to 1/4" sheet rubber on hand. In a pinch just use an xacto knife to cut the whole thing out including the bevel, and if you don't cut a consistent enough bevel just rotate the edge on a belt sander to smooth it out, not too hard.

The beveled edge ring is great, but I just used a common plumbing o-ring I bought at Home Depot. It fit perfectly and works great. It came in a three-pack for a couple bucks, so I also have extras.

As for the tensioner spring, VW didn't add extra parts for no good reason. My oil breather cap would not fit snugly in the case without it and could rattle or pop out.

I checked mine last night and it has the rubber ring.
