View original topic: Tire choice for 15x5.5 fuchs
NotchbackMarine Sun Jun 17, 2007 6:51 pm

I just recently acquired a sweet set of fuchs. My wheel/tire set up right now is stock 4-lugs with 135s up front and 165s in the rear. I really want to keep the same sizes, but I am having a difficult time finding 135s that accommodate the new width on the fuchs. The best tire fit I can find in stock anywhere is the 165/80/15. I need some suggestions.

Sounds like your issue is that the 135s are too skinny to fit your new 5.5" wheels. I doubt you will find any shop that will be willing to mount such skinny tires on 5.5" wheels... they're not safe. 155s are probably the skinniest tires you can fit on 5.5" wheels.

If you just want to know which tires will fit you wheels, give this tire calculator a shot:
http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp
It shows recommended rim widths for each tire size. In general, any tire size from 155-215 will fit onto your rims, but whether they will fit on your car and not rub, that's a different question

You didn't mention the offset/backspace of your new wheels. This is needed to give an idea of where the tires will sit in relationship to the inner/outer fenders. Some 5.5" Fuchs come w/ so much offset that most of the extra width will sit inside the mounting surface and will likely rub something on the inside of the tire. Some have so little positive offset that they will rub on the outside.

People have been running 135`s on 5.5 inch wheels for years with no problem.

Where have you been? 135's on a 15x5.5 polished 5 spoke is the true standard traditional look of Cal Look VWs. Its been that way for the past 25 years or more.

I've got 145's on mine and they're just peachy.

What are your tire and rim sizes in the back?

scottvw, aren't those 4.5x15 Fuchs on your car though? I am running 195 60's on my 5.5x15's, my car is not that low though.

by the way those 145s look to be stretched, Id say they are 5.5's not 4.5's

I am pretty sure scott has 5.5's on the front of his car
he did at one time unless he put 4.5's on it recently

135 on 5.5 is normal. I think you can seat that without even using ether.

Just asking, in the picture it looks like his spokes are sticking out further than the rim, than my 5.5's do, could just be the smaller tire

I've got 5.5's in the front on 145's with Deep 6's in the back with 205/65/15's.

I'm working on getting the pitting out of my 4.5's right now. I'll have them on in the near future.

That's the beauty of a narrowed adjustable beam and drop spindles together.
