Yup, like the title says, I've started tearing down the 71 Rustback (Krunchy). I started working on it Wednesday evening after work, mostly pulling the front fenders and hood, but also removing the rear seat pieces. Then Thursday, the title came (yes it's offical I own it now), and I pulled the doors, seats and carpet out, along with the wiring, dash pad and guages. Friday I didn't get much done, other than pulling the few bolts that were still actually holding the body to the tunnel (the sides of the floor were that far gone). Here's some pics for you to see how far I've gotten with it so far. It's looking like it might make it to the 2008 T-3 I yet. 8)

After seeing Russ's 71 Fastback, I thought I'd share this one with you.

No wonder it needed a gas heater, with all the flow thru ventilation, you'd need it. :shock:

I've decided thatI'm going to replace the pan halfs like a bug, ghia, or Thing would, as I've still got a ton of fabrication work to get done in the next 13 months, along with taking care of my customer work. Needless to say it's been a productive few days. It helps now that it cooled off into the low to mid 70's. :D[/img]

I'm confused though -- is that an early beam on the front? I thought '71s would have discs there.

It's going to be a mostly stock resto (actually more like a resto-custom), but it will get a few mods. As I currently didn't get the correct rear fenders for it (still haven't heard back from Martin yet either), I'll have to fabricate my own for the rear. The entire front clip will be replaced with one from a Square (already have), as this one is way too far gone to save. I'm planning on putting the 2.0L t-4 engine I have here in it, but after I do a cam swap to it (it's a 71 FI engine, which will work nicely in the 71 Notch). I still have to cut off the frame head, and replace it, as it's rusty on top and bottom. I should have the pan portion done in the next couple of weeks, then I can start working on the body fabrication phase.

It's a late beam, and yes it has discs.

You are doing better than I am on the Single cab. I did talk to my fabricator, and he said he could make about anything I wanted for it. frame wise.
I did get blankmange's engine torn down today.
I have seen that car in person, and Bob has a lot of work ahead of him, but I have seen him work, and it will get done.

Thanks for the kind words Russ. 8) Yeah, I thought the "C" pieces for your trucks frame rails would be fairly easy to fabricate. Did he give you any ideas on the rear corner pieces? Those do have a pretty tight radius, although I could probably bend them in the press brake at work if you can't find someone local. :wink:
Yeah, I took a few hours looking everything over before I pulled the body (mostly thinking, or as I like to call it... pre-planning), trying to figure out how I wanted to attack it. At one point I thought I'd pull the body off the Roadster, and use it's pan to help do the body fab, but then I thought that started to sound too much like work since I still had to do the Notch pan anyway. That is part of why I'm going to do the pans like a bug, then I'll put the front clip on, and then the rear portion using the doors to help get everything in place. Well at least that's the plan. :D

You're a far better owner than I am for that car, Bob. I knew you wouldn't let me down. When I was considering what to do with it, I first thought about cutting it up, but there wasn't much there to part out. Then I remembered seeing the before pictures of the roadster and thought if anyone could do something with this car, you could. Those pictures of the roadster were what led me to offer you this car. Congrats.

BTW, did you have to remove any of the side bolts to get the body off then pan, or did it just sort of come apart on it's own. :lol:

I removed 1 side bolt, and that was in the left rear corner. I don't know why that one stayed good, as the right one was toast. The rest of the side pan bolts were only holding the rubber body seal (not that it was doing anything, as the metal was gone on both sides of the rubber). :roll:
I am really wondering if I should have gotten more metal from you, off that Square, as I'm going to be fabbing a ton more pieces.

If you need any parts off the white parts car, you are welcome. I do need the doors and the rear corners. I think you looked the 71 fastback over, and it is pretty bad, but maybe there may be something you can use.
I want the pan and running gear.

Oh, I'm looking for a few piecs, but I didn't know how soon you'd be ready to cut up that 69. :roll: I mean I did give you a couple of differnt ideas to play with. :wink: Yeah, your 71 is almost as bad as mine. Fortunately my tetnus shots are up to date, and I'm used to working on rusty Michigan vehicles. :shock:
