I'm looking to do the Sub change, too, next year and now I'm thinking about going 2.5. I know that 2.2 conversion had been all CA smog checked and only requires the usual test only stations thanks to Kennedy Engineering...do you know if the 2.5 works the same way? Yes, you can do the 2.5 conversion BUT you'll have to take it to a referee and there's a chance they'll give you a hard time about it or not. The 2.5 engine good for conversions is the later OBDII engine which is a bit more complicated to wire correctly. The inspectors will be more strict about the lack of error codes which is difficult because there are sensors trying to read values that make sense on a modern Subaru but don't exist on a Vanagon. Interestingly, Mastercraft Motors in Santa Barbara only advertises the 2.2 and the 3.3 SVX but don't say much of anything with regards to making them legal except to say the 2.2 is CARB approved in California. Hmmmm :-k SmallCar in Washington does talk about California emissions and OBDII engines. Here's a quote.... Quote: California emissions We endeavor to provide all the emissions equipment for the Subaru engine that can reasonably be fitted to the Vanagon. Depending on the engine year, we fit one or two catalytic converters, up to three oxygen sensors and on OBD2 engines, supply a diagnostic port. Because of the variances in the responses of referees, we can guarantee a very clean running Vanagon but not necessarily passing a referee's scrutiny. Dual cats, OBD2 port emissions mod - $485 The Smallcar quote reminds us all that the referee process in California is VERY inexact, arbitrary, and can either be easy or a nightmare. I would love to hear from a 2.5 user in California about their experience. I think if they did that half of the cars in the state would be off the road. What a hassle that must be, I can't even imagine. However, I can't simply trade my gas motor for a diesel and call it a day. More than once this has tempted me to buy an old aircooled VW bus and build a big-bore turbocharged aircooled engine.
