O.k......this video is cool AND if you wait for the very end you'll hear the sound of the future. All three of these Transporters have Subaru motors in them. The blue one is a 2.5 and the other two have 3.3 SVX ( 230 hp) engines...

Oh, my

Nah......I wouldn't want to have one of those. Not all german!

Hey, my Bro and I trust his Loyale engine everyday on our 50 mile round trip to work. As far as having lodging when you get there is just badass. That would be a blast Thanks for the fun show and now I am getting green :fist: with envy.

LOL

Oh, by the way....the WHITE van is the 2.5 - my mistake ; the blue one and the high-top are the SVX vans. This is where I found the video...

damn....damn....damn....

Freakness, I've been watching your 2.2 conversion (awe-inspiring to those of us who are mechanically-challenged) and I'm wondering, since you live in California, if you could answer this question...

I'm looking to do the Sub change, too, next year and now I'm thinking about going 2.5. I know that 2.2 conversion had been all CA smog checked and only requires the usual test only stations thanks to Kennedy Engineering...do you know if the 2.5 works the same way? Or would that require a whole referee thing here in the Golden State?

Basically, this is what I have learned. Yes, you can do the 2.5 conversion BUT you'll have to take it to a referee and there's a chance they'll give you a hard time about it or not.

The 2.5 engine good for conversions is the later OBDII engine which is a bit more complicated to wire correctly. The inspectors will be more strict about the lack of error codes which is difficult because there are sensors trying to read values that make sense on a modern Subaru but don't exist on a Vanagon.

Interestingly, Mastercraft Motors in Santa Barbara only advertises the 2.2 and the 3.3 SVX but don't say much of anything with regards to making them legal except to say the 2.2 is CARB approved in California. Hmmmm :-k

SmallCar in Washington does talk about California emissions and OBDII engines. Here's a quote....

Quote: California emissions

We endeavor to provide all the emissions equipment for the Subaru engine that can reasonably be fitted to the Vanagon. Depending on the engine year, we fit one or two catalytic converters, up to three oxygen sensors and on OBD2 engines, supply a diagnostic port. Because of the variances in the responses of referees, we can guarantee a very clean running Vanagon but not necessarily passing a referee's scrutiny.

Dual cats, OBD2 port emissions mod - $485

The Smallcar quote reminds us all that the referee process in California is VERY inexact, arbitrary, and can either be easy or a nightmare. I would love to hear from a 2.5 user in California about their experience.

This is ONE of the reasons why I'm moving to Hawai'i........and when I get there I'll be looking to do an SVX (3.3 OBD1) conversion.....

Good luck

Very tempting little "cheat" in California...... :o

snowleopard Sat Jul 21, 2007 9:52 pm

Yeah...I'm peeved that I want to drop in a 2.5 or that 3.3...drool...but then run the risk of having some referee arbitrarily tell that it's no good. Then what?????
What's this about deisel not needing a smog check?

i believe that all the diesels are exempt from emmisions testing. i even have a little sticker on the inside of the door that says it. i don't live in cali, but nice knowing if i do i wont have any problems with my converted diesel

One positive thing about living in MI is that there are no vehicle inspections or emission laws! I think if they did that half of the cars in the state would be off the road. What a hassle that must be, I can't even imagine.

In California, if the vehicle is originally a diesel, then no testing. However, I can't simply trade my gas motor for a diesel and call it a day. That's also illegal here............ d'oh

Another loophole: pre-1975 vehicles are exempt from emissions in CA. More than once this has tempted me to buy an old aircooled VW bus and build a big-bore turbocharged aircooled engine. But the vanagon is already enough work, do I really want to start over with a 30-40 year old vehicle? (I think not)
