There is a big fat book at the DMV that is also in list form on their website, of all the personalized plate numbers that are already taken. When you apply for a "vanity plate" as they are called, you are told to list your top three choices as well as an explanation of what they mean -- in case you want to throw in a naughty reference in there. You do indeed have to pay more for these plates, I believe as much as an extra $40 a year or so to have them. This also includes special plates that commemorate certain organizations or events:

Heh, you are tempting fate here :) There is a certain amount of time that it takes for an unregistered license plate number to clear. Once said number clears, it becomes available for re-registration. But again, this doesnt apply to you because it is a black plate and for the time being, only your Samba that was originally registered with those plates in 196-whenever can use it.
Now if you un-register it, can you re-register it again with the same plates? I am not sure... the DMV might tell you "Sorry mate, shouldnt have taken that bus out of the states!" :D |

I'm off to Nova Scotia :D in due course. The Samba will be sold by then. That would be the slow version of sacrilidge - like baja-ing a heb on a tube floor pan. NS weather kills old cars. Kills new ones too, buyt they don't count.
Thanks for all the info. make more sense now.
You're up early!! Or working nights. |

It's ten to five in the Capital, just to the right of the 0 degree line, and I worked yesterday, worked/slumbered through last night's duty and have worked today. Worth an early finish at 5 in my book.
Off home top open up all the boxes that arrived yesterday - samba engine upgrades, disks and a vintage steering wheel.
And I woll doze off dreaming of my finished oval as usual.
From London to CA, goodnight and thanks. |

1. It is easier to get forgiveness than permission.
2. Here in NC you don't have to register the plate. The year of the plate has to match the year of the car, and the original plate just has to be somewhere in the car (trunk, under seat). Just bolt on the vintage and go.

3. You may also take a peek at this just to have one printed, in case you cant find, restore ect....

just my 2 cents on the subject. |

All states are different. I wouldnt drive the roads of CA with a fake plate, no matter what. If a cop runs the plate while behind you and it comes back to a different car or nothing at all? In his eyes, either the plates or the car is stolen. In law enforcement we called that a "felony stop" - so be sure to wear clothes you dont mind getting grease and asphault on for when you get drawn out of yer car at gunpoint  |

In MA all the registered vanity plates are available at their website, and you can "try" one that you would like to see if it is taken. Pretty cool.
My '50 has "VW1950" on it. I have a friend in NH who also has a 1950 11G and has the exact same plate. |

from their web site:
"Q: Can your replica country or USA State license plates be used legally?
A: Autogeardepot.com, Inc. and licenseplates.tv market our replica license plates for non-official use only and may not replace officially/government issued license plates." |

All the more reason why it's better to restore an existing legal plate after you register it to your vehicle then risk having a vintage plate "made" for you. |
