Probably want to do a search on this one, as it's been covered quite a bit. Jake Raby's the man to talk to when it comes to Type 4's...

Go here and also and click on the index on the right of the page. All you whan to know

http://tunacan.net/t4/owners/

Sample: all the T-4 blocks are similar and rarely see wear.

Engines: 411 412 912e 914 72 and later buses.

The engines range in sizes from 1700 1800 and 2000 all stock.
the 2000 914 has different heads then the 2000 VW. Cranks and rods differ but all fit the case. 1700 and 1800 heads can be opened to receive 2.0 p/c's
Lifters and Push rod tubes can be replaced without removing the heads.
Being much larger then a T-4 a T-4 in a T-1 car runs very cool. Never an overheating problem.
The engine bolts into a T-1 car after an upright conversion easier then the original T-1 engine and no modifications to the body of the car.
OK go to the sites and read the rest, my fingers are getting tired.

If it's a bus engine, be sure to check the heads for cracks. They live a hard life in a bus.

If you want to learn about the Type 4 engine, I'd like to point you to my web site:

Type 4: Secrets Revealed

I wrote it exactly for people interested in the Type 4 but had no clue about what makes the Type 4 different from a Type 1, and how to get the most from it.

Have a read and let us know if you have any questions.

Suggestion:

Take that engine you have now over to Gregg's VW in Natick MA and have him dial in those carbs. Fix what you have first.

You don't think a T4 wants to run through his 4.37 X 1.14 top gear? Just like Bus! How'd all that fancy stuff make it East of the Colorado river? When I lived back East, the local expert could tell the difference between SP and DP motors on a good day!

Like Randy said, dance with the one who brung ya (or the one you brung).

Drive 50 all the way there.

Ask him what it would cost to gear it up enough so that you could actually drive it on the road.

if i drive %) for 10 minutes my oil temps are about 230 degrees. nevermind driving 1 hr. i might just get it towed

Call them up first and talk to him. He may point you someplace closer to where ever you are. He is going to want to know the details of the engine build (size, camshaft, heads, distributor and timing, valve sizes, compression ratio, valve train geometry, and who built it), so be prepared to answer those questions about it.

You want to be there as they are adjusting things so that you can learn out of this deal.

Be prepared to pay. When you are good at what you do, you do not have to work for nothing.
