So after some sanding and body work, and some pressure from the neighbors- I put a coat of paint on the bus. I used the Harbor Freight High Volume Low Pressure paint sprayer. ( I can hear the gasps now  )
Over all not bad. This is only one coat. I posted a crap load of pictures at my blog. cheapgeek.biz - Here's some pictures for you..
SO far after one coat, I'm digging the new paint.
I probably should have posted this in the paint and body forum.. :?

The front door handles are held on by two allen bolts. The sliding door handle is held on by one screw. Why not take them off? Are you leaving the windows in?
You're going straight to hell. |

What kind of paint are you using? I'd like to see how this ends up when you are done. I could use some new paint, and this set up looks like something I could do. |

He called me before he started, lost his allen wrench set. I told him to relax, just cover all the crome with a load of Vaseline, do your painting, it'll all wipe off later.
So it's cool!
...yet he took out the headlights, the front vent grill, front bumper, and turn signals... etc... |

Yes!! Another driveway paint job!
Just in case you plan on removing the red overspray that is most definitely all over your glass, try doing it with a rag and some reducer (acetone, lacquer thinner) before you start scratching the shit out of your windows with a dull razor blade. It will also come off easier if you do it right away. Don't wait for it to cure on the glass. |

Looking good! I painted my Bus with the same paint and set up you are using this past spring and it came out really good. :D I keep the Bus here by the Jersey shore and with no garage to put it in I did not see spending thousands on a professional paint job when living in the rust belt and by the ocean, rust would just pop up in a couple of years. :( I would of primed it first if I were you. I painted mine a few years back without priming it and the paint just peeled off after a few months. I even sanded it too thinking the paint would have a rough surface to stick on but it wasn't enough. Good luck with it. |

I seen your reply to a post in paint/body..I agree, I can't spend thousands for a paint job, $150, I can do.
I was going to primer first- but the previous owner primed it for paint- over good original paint. There are some spots that I had to sand to bare metal.
I spent more time removing the bad primer and smoothing things out. I hoping the original paint will act as primer. I did something similar to a 71 SuperBeetle I had. That paint job lasted until I sold it three years later. I plan on taking some pictures today or Wednesday. I want to see how well the paint dried. I'm going to put multiple coats on the bus. I think (hope) it will be good. :D |

Good tip! After the first coat was done, I looked at the windows. There are very little places where over spray accumulated. This sprayer is supposed to have 40% less over spray than air rigs. |

Another way to do it is a trick I learned spray painting crappy looking American cars. use tape to mask the window molding, then spray the window with Pam cooking spray or spray a rag with it and wipe it across the window. |

well yeah but a few newspapers a couple of rolls of tape and like an hour or less prep time you could have covered your windows at least. good luck with the dust. when i primed outside there was a layer of dirt, dust, and other grime from spraying out in the yard like that. for a pretty minimum investment you can build a paint booth inside a garage with some 2x4's and plastic. technically you could build it out in the yard too. |
