How will I know if I need to rebuild my carburetor? My friend has a 1974 truck that he is having the carb rebuilt and its going to give him a few extra miles to the gallon/gas. I have the same year of bug but I dont know if I need to rebuild mine.

If you cannot idle/tune the carb it is one of 2 things, bad (worn) throttle bushing, or there is crud in the jets. the latter is easier, pull them out either replace or clean and replace the accelerator diaphram and vacuum diaphram along with all seals/gaskets/o-rings.

Worn bushings need to be sent out to someone that rebuilds carbs, preferably solex carbs.

If it runs ok, probably not.
