I've read the technical articles for the conversion of an early bus to a dual circuit master cylinder using the 71 MC, but the one question I never found an answer to is: why not just install a 1967 dual circuit MC in my 1964 bus? Is there a mounting problem? Something I'm not considering?(since I don't have one of each in front of me for comparison).

It's not so much a mounting problem as it is that the '67 master cylinders are crazy expensive

Yep -- one year only part. Also the pushrod is also '67 only, I think.

Yep, it is. It's longer than the earlier ones.

The 71's are newer.

I found a source for the 67 master cylinders (Old Volks) at $240. They are "ATE Germany" although it is unknown if they were actually made in Germany. Is ATE a reliable manufacturer?

I'm also looking to do the dual circuit MC swap... has anyone located a source for those old volvo MC reserviors that fit so nice?

Wolfsburg West carries them for $225

Any year Rabbit MC reservoirs work perfectly on the '71 and up MC. Your local junkyard or VW dealer probably has a few used ones. I got mine with a low brake fluid sensor in the cap.

I thought that the rabbit reservoir sat at a funky angle on the bus MC and the fill hole did not line up with the access hole on the bus floor. The pics I have seen of the Volvo reservoir made it looked like it was meant to fit the bus.

Yes they are the best and OE. They will last a looooooooooog time if you bleed them through every 2 or 3 years. They also come with 2 new brake light switches already installed.

I found new master cylinder reservior's made for the 71-79 MC (cheap $20)... but looks like it doesn't have a cap - maybe a tube attaches to the top for a remote fill elsewhere... has anyone used one of these?

OR - what about using a beetle MC reservior? would the little hose flanges that attach to the MC fit the bus MC? and use a beetle remote tank?

OR - can someone post a photo of their rabbit reservior mounted up and in place? I'm just wondering how much fluid it holds since the top will be at an angle...

I don't know where you could mount a remote resevior high enough in a split bus to gravity feed the cylinder. I'm sure if it was easy a lot of people would have done it. I ran a Rabbit resevior for a while without problems. Was lucky enough to find a 67 later.

The rabbit reservoir does sit a little funky, but it works fine and the filler cap does line up with the hole in the floor.

Wonder why no one's making the '67 reservoir. Sheesh. ATE should make it.

Don't some Volvo reservoirs mate up?

Krustybus Sat Sep 15, 2007 7:41 am

Volvo 140 resevior's from the late 60's. I'd bet they're as hard or harder to find than 67 only bus.

I finally found a source from where I can get a new reservoir for the dual circuit conversion!

compared with a volvo reservoir

NICE!

That's excellent. Where?

I got it via a friend of mine.
I requested the Volvo reservoir (part# 678091) and this is what he came up with...
