Does anyone know the driveshaft lengths for the T2 automatic?
There seems to be a different length of axle on both sides of the auto gearbox?

Thanks

Peter

Yes, that is correct! they are supposed to be of different lengths.

Check the chapter in your workshop manual, re automatic transmission. If I remember correctly, they are both different from those used for manual transmission.

I checked in the Automatic Transmission chapter of my Robert Bentley manual, for the 1968~79 VW Type 2, which gives the following information:

Manual Transmission

Drive Shaft (both left & right-hand sides) – length = 476 mm (VW part No. 211 501 211)

Automatic Transmission

Drive Shaft (left-hand side) – length = 457 mm (VW part No. 211 501 211 B left)

Drive Shaft (right-hand side) – length = 505 mm (VW part No. 211 501 211 B right)

The driveshafts for the automatic, are also said to have a ridge around the middle somewhere.

Having previously encountered various errors in the Robert Bentley manual, I am somewhat wary of the VW part numbers which are quoted, because normally, I would not expect two separate items to bear the same part number, distinguished by the addition of "left" and "right".
