I've been looking around and haven't seen where anyone makes J tubes for T4 engines. Does anyone make these? I've been thinking of doing away with my heaterboxes cause my Y pipe that goes over rear tranny mount x member is rotted out on the Westy and it is a pita to get out and replace. Also my flapper boxes are all rotted out too so they would need replaced also. I'm thinking about installing a propane or gas heater and ducting it into the stock system at a later time anyways. I don't drive my bus in the winter so I really wouldn't need heat anyways.
I would like to get some feedback on this so any comments are welcome.
By the way my engine is a 78 T4 F.I. with the stock heater boxes.

I would like to do the same thing because my heater doesn't work and it never will. I've never seen J-tubes for a type 4 either. Someone makes them for a Type 1, just like everything else. Those Type 1 guys are lucky.
I suppose if a guy was a good welder he could make some, or modify the type 1 j-tubes. I think it's just a matter of having the correct flanges, but there is probably more to it than I realize. |

They're apparently available in the UK. |

What I was thinking of doing was just making a pipe with flanges on it to go between the elbow that I already have there and the muffler. I need to redo the gaskets from the end of the header back anyways so I could do it then.
Does anyone have a crappy set of 75-78 heater boxes they would be willing to cut the flanges off of and sell them to me? My heaterboxes are in decent shape and I don't wanna cut them up as I may put the stock heating system back in someday if I get ambitious enough to replace the Y pipe. |

I'd probably think about it if I wasn't going to keep them. I haven't checked them all over but the heatexchangers look good from what I've seen of them anyways. If I make the tubes I'll probably clean them up and put them in my parts stash for later use. |

I have a crappy set of heater boxes but the flanges are pretty crappy too.
Doesn't German Supply sell flanges? |

You might want to check out a 911 or 914 Porche exhaust system for a set of header type manifolds. They are really neat and should work just great for your needs. Good Luck! |

I bought a pair from 'EUROPEAN MOTORWORKS' 13224 Prairie Ave, Hawthorne, CA 90250 (310-644-8038) back in '03 (they call 'em heater box elimination pipes). They bolt up to the head just like the pic that is posted. They have a local guy fab them up...cost me $165 for the pair (raw). They fit and work good. Dunno if they have a web site... |

On my 78, I made flanges & welded a pipe in. Lite 4-2-1 with the S&S header I have. Everything to do with cabin heat on my bus has been removed, Y-tube, flapers, ducts. Stock is too much weight! |

To eliminate the heater boxes on a type4 engine is easy.....
Find a set of 411 or 412 heater boxes and you have instant J-tubes that fit perfectly......
I have been running these for years on my '77 2.0 |

No fins. Saves you the trouble of torching off the aluminum heat sink. |
