I have full coverage with windshield replacement. It was a hundred dollar deductible for the job, but I paid an extra hundred for rust clean up, sealant and filling the hole.

just out of curiosity. Who is manufacturer of new windshield, tinted top band or clear glass?

The manufacturer is Fy here is a shot of the info. No tint stripe on top.

not today but over the last few weeks I rebuilt the rear bench. I don't like the setup and color scheme of my 82 (brown!) and will rebuild the whole interior (more info in this thread). the rear bench seemed to be the easiest part, so why not start with that.

This is is how the old one looked like:

Fabricating is pretty straight forward: use the old ones as a template. I've used 1/2" plywood for the bottom part and 3/4" for everything else.

Never laminated anything before or used a router but that's not really difficult to learn. I'm going with the grey color scheme of the later vanagons and also upgraded the locking mechanism with one from a 87 that showed up in a local salvage yard. Here's a picture of the final result - back:

and a picture from the front. both starter and house battery live there as well as the inverter/charger under the batteries. I've also relocated the 110V outlet

Lessons learned: a) practice laminating and using the router on a piece of scrap wood and b) 3/4" plywood is too heavy. I'll go with the 0.5" for the cabinets.

I went and picked up the trailing arms from the plating people!

Then dropped them off to be powder coated. The guy said they would be done tomorrow so it's looking good for this weekend to install them.

Yesterday afternoon I finally got around to installing my new Stan's Headers SubaruVanagon header. What an improvement over the POS Small Car junk... made in Washington and fit perfectly. Looks nice, too! ;)

The header hangs down just about as far as the shortened oil pan - I don't foresee any problems with clearance.[/img]

What type of glass are you buying ? I can only find FY or XY . If you are buying something else ,I'd like to know what the brand is.
More than that ,what is the DOT # ? I hear a lot of talk that this Chinese stuff does not fit. I have installed at least 30 Vanagon Windshields without incident. Maybe I am just that good that I can make anything work. A lot of what you think is domestic is still made in China.
I have seen some PGW glass (made in China) with a blue band , I have heard of some Pilkington(Mexico/Canadian) but none of my suppliers have them.

Here's what I used..1980 Westy, green tint matches the OG glass Sekuit (sp?) and the blue shade helps for short people..yes, I know purists will say it belobgs on a Chevy van but we like it..Atlanta installer did a great job

I just added a couple of spacers inside my front Koni shocks. What I am aiming for is to keep my 215 75 R 15 tires from hitting my fender flares at Syncro Solstice. I have Van Cafe springs I installed 2 years ago. I have an '86 2wd Wolfsburg Weekender camper. I hope it works, I would rather hit the jounce stops than my fender flares.

So I replaced my rotors, pads, and wheel bearings. The ride is so smooth now. Only thing I messed up was the speedo cable couldn't get it back through the dust cap. So needless to say my speedometer isn't working now. :?

Transaxle fluid change. Read a van load of info on here.

Im sure its the OE trans with a bazillion miles on 'er.
So I opted to go factory(ish) and sourced some Sta-Lube 85w-90 GL/4.

Kinda glad I did this so I now know how much fluid is in there. I did have it serviced about two years ago. Today, a bit over 4 qts came out. eh

I opened the gallon jug of Stay Lube and marked the side at the fluid top. Then split this into four marks down the side of the jug to represent four qts. Split that last qt mark in half so I knew where 3.5 qts would be.

Then I trimmed the hose from the hand pump so it would equate the depth of 3.5 qts. This meant that about 3/4" of fluid will be left in the jug. I allowed for the fluid in the pump hose with a couple more squirts. I'm confident that there is no more than 3.75 qts in there. Did this on the ground on my slanted driveway.

But I see that I need new glasses. I mistakenly put the top plug in the lower drain hole. Out came the drain tub again and a quick change with the correct lower plug happened. Some fluid was lost But I pumped in about three squirts with the left over fresh 1/2 qt.

There was still some new stuff left and now all is really well. I wont give a mind to the fluid level being 1/2" or 9/16" below the hole until I get it on a level surface and after a few miles. Prolly wont even worry about it then.

Pulled out of the garage, played in the rain. Oil change, new plugs, rotate tires, fuel filter.

Took out the Christmas lights from each of the windows.

Attached the grille 'brow' I bought in Germany and that I had been questioning.

Raining out all day, or else I would have washed, compounded and waxed it. Next weekend I guess. Needs a good buff.

Started cleaning the inner surfaces.

Love that paint job 'imagesinthewind'. Bet that masking took some time!. I wasn't so creative today...more destructive ... and finished parting out my donor camper.
