I’m looking at a Super about 100 miles away from me, and I’m going to see the car in person before I buy it. However, I’m not 100% sure if I want the car, so I don’t want to carry the money with me. I bank with a local credit union in Austin, and they don’t have a branch in the city the car is in.
Does anyone have any tips for getting a fairly large sum of money (about $3000) besides hitting up an ATM 10 times?
Any ideas would be appreciated. |

The ATM trick may not work... most have a maximum daily withdraw limit to keep you from getting robbed.
If this was me, I'd take my son with me, give him the $3000 to hold and drop him off at a nearby Bob's Big Boy restaurant and tell him to cool it there while I went and looked at the car.
If I decided to go thru with the purchase, I'd pick him up with the cash and do the deal that way.
BTW, if you do a cash purchase, YOU make up the receipt with as much specific information as possible and print it twice. Each party gets an original. |

Get a Cashiers check from your credit union payable to the seller.
I would get if for an amount smaller than what the sales price is and then cash for the difference.
$2500 check $500 cash or whatever you feel comfortable traveling with. |

What's the matter, are you alergic to cash?
Get $3k from your bank and stuff it in your pocket. If you don't like the car, walk away and deposit the cash in your bank.
I can't believe you have to ask this. |

I've done cash advances from my credit card 3 times for high dollar items.
It is actually pretty easy, just insure you have a credit limit to support the cash advance.
Go to your bank & get $300, and if you like the car than give the guy te $300.
Have the seller take you to his bank, and complete the transaction at his bank,
by getting the cash advance at his bank he knows the check or cash if that is what he wants is GOOD.
If you show up at my house with $3000 I wouldn't take it without having a bank accept it. |

This doesn't sound like a great idea nowadays. With all of the sicko-pshyco child molesters and kidnapper freaks out there these days, you're child could be harmed or could get robbed of the cash if left alone.

100 miles is a long distance? You're going to venture all of an hour and a half from your house. Bring the cash with you if you're a serious buyer. If you want to just have a look and make your decision later there's no law against that either. I would at least bring $500 for a deposit so they will know you're serious. |

Why don't you want to carry the $3000 with you?
Safety? Hide it in the car somewhere.
Since it's only 100 miles, just come back the next day with the cash if you strike a deal.
I bet 50% of the people at VW swap meets have at least $3000 on them. |

just take the money along. i deal in antiques/junk most of the people that carry large sums of money, dont look like they carry or even have large sums of money.dont wear a sign around your neck that sez'i have 3000.00 in my pocket"
i know people that always have at least 5000.00 on them/accessable[not in a bank] |

temporary credit cards you can buy them at convince stores
you charge them up with the amount you want to spend(3000) and you can dispense the amount at any ATM
if the ATM has a limit you can hit it a couple times in a row, its what I did when I bought a car long distance once
I also give the cards a gifts, better than cash |

Man, you are in Austin, TX.
Texas man, Texas. 100 miles is just around the corner in Texas. Round Rock is just a little north of Austin. San Antonio is just a little south of Austin.
I drove from San Antonio to Houston for my 57, I know it took all day, but in the end it was not even far. I took cash with me, had a club buddy come along to help me look the car over. In the end take an adult friend with you. Let him/her check the car out with you, let him/her give you opinions of the car, but in the end it is your decision. It feels so much safer when you are not alone.
Anyway, where is this car? |

If you go to your bank and get a cashiers check made out to the owner, he can cash it and it's certified/guaranteed through the bank. If you don’t end up getting it, just have your bank reverse the funds and cancel the cashiers check. The whole process will cost you around 8 bucks.
I wouldn’t trust myself with 3 bills either. I’d end up heading out to buy a car, black out and come back with $3,000 of useless crap.

I'd say that going 100 miles with 3 grand is better than going 900 miles with only 7 benjis. |
