Just wondering if people could post pics of where they have their VDO or similar gauges on the dash? Especially if you have a tachometer. What do you think are a essential if any: oil temp, oil pressure, CHT etc?

The PO for mine put them under the dash off the steering wheel and I really can't see them easily.

if you're installing a VDO tach install it in the clock hole if you don't have a clock. it's a perfect fit. make sure you get the retaining ring for it.

I put my VDOs under the radio.

Tach mounted

VDO's under the radio (oil temp, oil pressure, ammeter) ammeter has been replaced with a voltmeter.

CHT in a pod, only the pod can be seen in this image. Made the picture before I got the gauge.

I have my radio/cassette unit beneath the dashboard, where it's easier to reach!

Here is my set up Vdo Tach in the clock hole ( Bus Boys adapter) and Temp, oil pressure, and battery out of a 914 in another Bus Boys face plate

( radio trim, late model Beetle to cover P.O. hack job )

I have the tach in the blank on the right side of the spedometer, OP, OT and volts under the radio. I have a rubber triple hole VDO holder under the dash, between the steering column and the E brake with a vacuum, amps and a clock.

I'm a gauge freak....

Mine under the radio, there was a nasty mark there anyway, but now its gone:-
:D Bought some guages on eBay last week VDO ones originally fitted in an Audi.

This is how they came

Marked out the dash

Drilled it out

Fitted & so is my Becker Sat Nav

Mine is Ditto MadMax78 and nvwainfo. Also used the Bus Boys adaptor, really looks good.

Thanks, the rear hatch inside is done with it too, next will be the sides of the walkthru and the back of the z-bed

I might also make some trim for the bottom of the doors when i make or buy new door panels

Looks like everyones utilizing the same spots for triple gauges.

I'm looking for space to place the CHT, maybe use a single pod under dash.

Does anyone have pictures of putting the 3 VDO gauges in a pod under
the dash between steering wheel and e-brake ? Can you see the gauges
in that location while driving ? I will also be adding VDOs to my 78 Westy
but am relunctant to drill out the dash.

That looks nice Desertbusman, how did you do it?

On the RHD, Australian, British, Japanese(?), South African, New Zealand & other specification, 1968~79 VW Type 2s, the clock position is close to the ventilation outlet & cab door, rather than the heater & ventilation control levers, so I don't know whether that would be practical for us.

At sometime in the future, I had in mind to fabricate completely new, main & supplementary instrument panels, using only 80 mm & 52 mm VDO Cockpit gauges, some of which are still in my pending-projects box. This would enable me to fit into the dashboard, somewhere between 10 to 12 instruments, including two Lucas, 60 mm diameter, 8-segment warning-light clusters.

I like under the radio pics for the OP, OT, and CHT. If I get a tach, I think the best place would be on the dash above the speedometer, since I have the clock installed. It depends if I can find one with a covered back so the wire isn't visible. I don't like where they are now but I'll wait a bit before changing them. I can't see them without leaning forward while driving.

Without a clock, the existing console has a lot of structure that isn't doing anything and can be cut away. And new structural pieces can be fabricated and fitted to strengthen the console and provide for the gauge mountings. Plexiglass and epoxies. The new face is the laminate skin off of some Westy cabinetry. I'll probably end up doing a matching insert for the glove box door and the lower dash switch recesses.

With the gauges straight forward they are easier to monitor than if they are over in the center of the dash, but it's probably no big deal. With Polly's bus, she didn't want a radio so we put 3 gauges in the radio recess. With both busses I just had a thing against cutting the dash.

Did you also retrieve the Audi's 50~170 ºC oil-temperature sender for the 50~170 ºC oil-temperature gauge, which I believe has different temperature vs resistance characterisics to that of the various, commonly available 50~150 ºC oil-temperature senders, which are sold by many after-market retailers?
