You need to take the speedometer out and check the gears for the mileage counter... that was the noise problem in my wifes cabriolet.
As for the jumping speedo usually means speedometer cable is shot.... |

at the windshield side on the instrument cluster cover, there are a couple indentations where you can pull upwards, towards yourself. Carefully pull up and it will come off.
The switches in the cluster will all come out by pushing the two tabs on each one inward.
The cluster is held in place by 4 screws.
Carefully undo them and be careful not to lose them.
Then there's just the speedo cable and a multipin connector to take off. Carefully remove these two things and it should then be free. |

When working with the speedo/tach housing, be real careful not to over tighten any of the many screws used to hold things together. The old plastic is very brittle, and cracks easily. This goes for the four screws that hold the assembly to the dash also.
A thin film of silicone grease on the spring tabs will make the gauge pod cover a bunch easier to remove later, and shouldn't effect the plastic.
While you're there, have a look at your brake fluid. Remember, the stuff eats paint and should be ginger ale colored. |
