After you do a thread-specific search you get the results that direct you to exact posts. You can click on each results to read that post and go right to it, you don't have to go back and try and find it separately.

I'm confused with the search - are some terms not search-able?

I've been trying to search "drive" or "driving" but no matter how i set the options in the search, i get the old "No topics or posts met your search criteria"

I'm snowed - whats going on? I feel like i've been taking crazy pills.

EverettB Wed Jun 08, 2011 11:08 am

Yes, drive and driving do not return results from the Forum search.

The way the search works is that it will exclude words that appear too much.
Since those are very common, they get excluded.
Otherwise you would get a zillion results, which is useless.

You can try using the Google search of the site, sometimes that will give you better results:
It's search from the "Home" menu or:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/search.php

thanks Everett,

Would there happen to be a list of unsearchable terms a guy could reference?

no biggie, just thought there might be one posted somewhere..

EverettB Mon Jun 13, 2011 12:23 pm

No, it's huge, although most are really common words like "its" and "the"

Is there a way to search for users by geographic location? I know many members list their location, and it might be helpful if one is stranded and looking to contact locals if he/she could search by current location.

EverettB Thu May 09, 2013 10:16 pm

There is not, beyond doing a classifieds search by location.

this morning I was able to see all new posting with thousands of pages,.. them I do not know what I did, but not I do not see anything when I hiy search.... now I have to client on new post link and just a few show up instead that search and see all those many posting

what do I do ?? please help

EverettB Tue Sep 03, 2013 9:11 am

The New Posts link only shows what is new since you last logged in.

So for instance, this morning I had 200 threads with new postings since last night.
If I logout right now and come back in an hour, there might only be 50 threads with new posts. If I wait all day, there might be 300.

Everett,

Where is the coveted FAQ section the "use the search" crew points everybody to? I found it once, somehow, and haven't been able to since. Only the faq section about username stuff.

Hell, i'll never find this post again to see your reply to be honest, but in the rare chance I do, thanks for the help!

The FAQs are typically the "Sticky" threads that are at the top of each section.

For instance the Split Bus FAQ is at the top of the Split Bus Forum section.

Not all of the sections have a FAQ but most do.

IF using GOOGLE custom search preface it with "thesamba.com:searchstring"... That is " thesambe.com:" (a colon) and then "search string"...

If you are talking about the Site search page at:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/search.php

You do not have to do that - it is already set to search only this site.

I've noticed the Title Only box is now always checked by default since this weekend's upgrade. Is this on purpose?

EverettB Mon Feb 15, 2016 8:17 am

The changes I made Sunday AM did not work to speed up the search of the site.

I added that to see if making "Title Only" the default would help alleviate some of the search speed issues on the site.

It helped but not enough so I had to take off the internal Forums search and change it to be a Google Search of the Forums for now.

I hope to re-enable it in the future.

For now the checkbox does nothing because it just redirects you into Google searching the site instead.

Paulbeard Tue Feb 16, 2016 10:32 pm

The Google search never shows a search box for me to enter a query. So it's not working all that well.

EverettB Tue Feb 16, 2016 10:41 pm

Can you post a screen capture?

There is a search box when you go into
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/searchg.php

If you don't see that maybe you have some piece of software that is blocking it.
Maybe an ad blocker thinks it is doing something ad-related?

Paulbeard Tue Feb 16, 2016 10:53 pm

there is no form. I don't use an ad blocker.
