Ok... everyone keeps saying part it out to save other verts but, WHAT are you parting?!

A rotten crusty top frame?

A junk batwing?

Some rotten fenders?

The tweaked dash?!

The only thing I see that COULD easily be saved for another car is the mirror... Im sure the rest is also saveable but its so far gone, I dont call this a "parts car".

Ninamashr Thu Jan 03, 2008 12:17 pm

If you do most of the work yourself then it would definatley be worth it. You'd have to buy an oval donor then locate the missing vert only pieces. My guess would be about 15k to get it on the road, providing that you do everything, welding, body work, upholstery, etc;. If you want a show car then double or triple that at least.

Slowlow Thu Jan 03, 2008 12:21 pm

Oh, I did forget the windows and windsheild frame.

I agree with Ninamashr, if you want it done right.

I suppose that is true if you are happy welding '65 rear quarters on, putting in repro pans that don't match the originals and slapping a couple '62 door s on it.

When you find me a set of split heater channels for my '51 at "very low costs", please PM me......

Yeah, I saw those. In fact I PAID for them once (much more than the current asking price), didn't hear from the seller, literally forgot myself that I had bought them, then e-mailed him. He said he hadn't shipped them got real busy at work, etc, etc, and that he just didn't think he would have the time to get them out to me. He promptly refunded my money via PayPal.

And I *think* that is the same guy who I bought the arched panel under the engine bay firewall from, I was adamant that I need the WHOLE thing and not to cut it short. Well I did get the whole thing, but it just happened to have been cut in half.

I even PM'ed him about that new ad, because I still think I can use those parts, but haven't heard back.

Know of any others????

Lets do the math:

- taillights - $500
- semaphores 1,500
- Rear seat - 750 (if you can find one)
- Front seat - 250+
- New dash 300
- New wood/top - 2,500 + (if you do it yourself)
- Rear window 750
- Rear decklid 2,000
- Engine 750-1000

I'm at $10k spending about 30 seconds, only on parts! And there are TONS of stuff I'm missing! Get the sawzall out on that mo fo!

John there is alot of metal to be found, you know it and i know it but it will take time and money. repro pans why do you say that???? they still sell NOS pans like the one i got from KOCH, its out there just look and you would be amazed what you could find on the swaps and also ofcourse the samba....

Split heater channels are being made by a couple of people and Wolf makes perfect ones like the factory did so that excuse is just lame....

Why not? I'm sure there are some patch panels that could be taken from that car. Doors might be useful, the glass, the window regulators, etc. why are you so hard on buying it?

Rich - if you want to fix it up, more power to you. I think the point is, that for the kind of money you would be spending to just get some of the major parts, you could find a much better complete project for the same money.

Hell, I don't even think its a 54. Looks more like a late 55 - no semaphores.

Wiggy Thu Jan 03, 2008 3:09 pm

You would be 1,000,000 times better off starting off with something like this.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=525898

Buy this car, and take the parts off of the "54" that might be useful and you will be way ahead.

I understand your point but then again do you understand mine. And what kind of money are they asking for it ?? ofcourse that would either make it a deal or not? so if is a 55 it aint worth try to save it???? well atleast you could knock off $1,500 for the semi's, right :D

Fuck that, your famous for quoting " rib doors are way better than regular doors " so get your fact straight Kev. and by the way Happy New Years bro :D

And you know you cant put 54 parts on a 57 sucka  I mean you can but Real Folks would know better 8)

I do understand your point.

Even if they were giving it away, I wouldn't save it. Just looks too far gone to me. You spend all the money getting it restored, and you end up with a frankenstein. Do I think it could be saved? Sure, anything can be saved. Just comes down to does it make sense, and I think the answer is no.

If this a Heb, or a super rare car, it would be different story. Of course, the value would be much greater when the car was done.

Ribbed door semaphore verts is where its at. I don't get a hardon for just the ribbed doors.

I'm sure the Real Folks would also know that there were parts on a 54 that are interchangable with a 57...

Happy new year to you too!

Why not? Because I doubt anything is worth cutting off. Maybe a small section that would be worth cutting out and replacing into another car, but nothing too big that you couldnt make anyway.

I agree on the glass and regs, but the doors are probably wasted.

Im NOT saying this because I want it, I just think it would be better to sell as a whole instead of cutting it up into useless peices that are too rotten to graft into another car.

Ive got enough junk to fool with already.
