I recently had only one cylinder on my 73 super firing. I loosened the distributor and turned it 10 degrees counterclockwise and it ran fine but with a loss of power. so I took it to a shop that specializes in old volkswagens and they set something on the carb and they set the timing for me. but they moved the distributor back where I had it before and they said it was supposed to fire at top dead center. they said it was bad to set it advanced or
retarded. Is it true that you need it to fire at tdc or is it better to be atdc or btdc? |

Exactly... different timing marks for different years/distributors

While there were some old 009s that did have a vacuum can, I assume that yours is centrifugal only. There are many manufacturing variances with these. Total advance and curves vary. Other than initial install, the only way to time them is at full advance. Most motors like a total advance of between 28 -32 BTDC. 30 degrees BTDC is a good starting point. |

In case he might get confused... this means REVVED UP to about 3000 RPMS when checking it for total advance... if he set it to 30 BTDC at idle that would not be good  |
