FYI - I just saw this on the SV Yahoo page.

Small Car has a new stainless exhaust that fits the WBX and Subaru Conversions...

It sure looks purdy....

Another option besides TK's.

I added the 911 muffler and custom high flow cat.

It sure looks like a good deal to me. It also has a clever design detail. They set up the tailpipe and muffler outlet flange to use a metal donut just like the J pipe. This allows you to angle the tip for whatever your application demands.

I have a Smallcar stainless Vanaru header, and the quality is very impressive. Whoever they have doing those stainless parts has certainly got it together.

Yeah, the wbx compatibility ends up being a bonus since their Subaru conversion uses the stock wasserboxer J-pipe and muffler. The parts they make for the conversion end up being a high quality solution for wbx owners too. Post a picture when you install yours.

Eric,
I just received my 911sc Muffler in the mail today. What kind of cat is that? How is the interior noise level of the engine under load?

Do you have more pictures of how you hung the muffler. Fortunately, mine also came with the 911 clamps. Now I just have to figure out how to connect it to the the SC header. Any help on what you did would be great!

Thanks,

Paul

I have this stainless exhaust, 2 years old, and it's really rusty. I would not be able to tell the difference between this and "steel".

Should 304 rust like this? I could post a photo but it might give some folks the willies...

Pictures, pictures, pictures
(you have to chant it like the jerry springer theme song)

It was gleaming, looked like chrome, just like this:

This photo below is 22 months old. I'm surprised to the extent that it rusted. Wondering if the aluminized coating process would be better than this type of stainless (304).

Notice even the Stainless bolts rusted bigtime.
The question: Is this "normal" for stainless --->exhaust<--- systems?

The small car exhaust sure does look nice new but I've seen quite a few failures. The outer surfaces do rust, especially in salty conditions but the main thing is that sometimes the muffler baffles come loose, causing a loud and rattling exhaust. Stock steel mufflers last about as long.

The headers are made of the same stuff and they look beautiful at first but I've seen many crack and rust. I'm curious as to how many people have had good or bad experiences with those headers after a year or so of regular use?

syncrodoka Fri Nov 26, 2010 10:05 pm

I had to have several cracks welded up recently. Mine were packed up with mud but they didn't look too bad when they were cleaned up for the welding.
They are the only syncro subaru conversion header available so...

purplegodzilla Sat Nov 27, 2010 7:00 am

In salty conditions it would still rust. Have you tried cleaning it with naval jelly?

Not sure which Subaru engine you have but.......

Next week I will have a complete, stainless, made in the USA replacement exhaust system for the SVX EG33 motors that have been transplanted into Vanagons.
It is a three piece header system.
If any of the parts crack....only that part needs to be replaced, not the entire header.
This system will work with RMW and Small Car parts.
The factory skid plate on the Syncro, if fabricated to ft with the Small Car mounts will be able to be retroed to work with this system very easily.

Pictures, installation pictorial and pricing will be available shortly.

The manufacturer is considering a lifetime warranty on these products.

I will keep you posted.

I am running a EJ series motor but it is good to hear that there is another player in the field anyways- everyone benefits from friendly competition. :)

insyncro Sat Nov 27, 2010 10:14 am

Small Car EJ headers seem to hold up better than the SVX headers.
I don't think there are any EJ headers in the works yet, but I will check and keep everyone posted.

what i am looking for is a tuned, equal length header for the EJ 2 port heads. I was thinking about picking up an OBX header and modifying it to fit the vanagon. A tuned header can easily at 5 - 10hp to a stock Subaru engine.

Vanaru and I are installing a new made in the USA (by Hans) stainless exhaust header and J pipe on our EJ25 installs. They aren't available for sale alone currently but they're included in the conversion. They're fairly new so there aren't too many miles racked up on them yet but the Stainless is heavier gauge and they're jigged up propperly so you don't need to pry them onto the engine like the small car ones so there shouldn't be the same kind of cracking issues. Time will tell how they hold up but so far so good.

vanaguy Sun Nov 28, 2010 1:27 am

I've got about 3,000 miles on one of Vanaru's prototypes, and it's been great.
It's thicker, heavier metal, and it went on super easily and is a little quieter than the SmallCar P.O.S. it replaced- the SC one made a sort of whooshing sound on acceleration and Vanaru's does not.
I haven't had a chance to drench it in a salty, slushy winter, but it has certainly not become a sodden, discolored, cracked & rusty mess the way my SC one had after just a few thousand miles.

Status on the Hans wonder headers?????
