I have a 2.0 liter FI bus. Lately it has been taking 5-6 sec for the oil pressure to come up. I just changed oil and it took at least 10 sec for oil pressure to come up. I am worried that something is drastically wrong. Any ideas? I have good oil pressure when it finally does come up - 60-70 lbs. I also believe the gauge as the rpm change slightly as soon as I get pressure. Any assistance or insight would be appreciated.

What weight did you use???
It will take a few seconds longer on startup after an oil cahnge to fill the filter and purge the air...
Sounds Okay, maybe the mains and the oil pump are just a bit tired but I would not worry if it has good pressure at idle and running down the road. Try a oil stabilizer a good one like LUCAS.... |

I am using 20W-50.
Do you think the oil pump is ready to die on me?

No I personally don't think so... I think it's very common for a gauge or a idiot light to take a few secs to go out, older engines take a few seconds to build pressure. The key is it is good when it is hot and running and at idle when it is hot right? No worries then....
I presume you use a quality filter like a Bosch or a Mann? and you still clean the screen and drain plate???? if not do so...
The only thing that comes to mind (besides normal wear)is the pickup tube being restricted or loose inside the case.... |

| My engine also does this. I use 20w50 and Mahle filters. I worried about it too until I checked the guages while running under load. I run good pressure and temp at highway speeds so I don't worry anymore. As far as using Lucas stabilizer, well, my experience is that Lucas made it take longer to come up to pressure. Besides, use good oil and good filters and you don't need the snake oil additives. |

Having tried and tested alot of products over the years, IMHO Lucas is a viable product not of the snake oil variety like
Slick 50 and Duralube, cheap "motor honey" Ect....
I never noticed it taking any longer for the light to go out when using it, but it may depend on the climate... Here in south Texas we have very few days of below 50 -60 degree mornings....
I know it helps keep older engines alive longer than not using it... |
