Got a line on a 1980 Vanagon motor for next to nothing. 99.99% positive it is the same as my 1976. Just need the assurance for the extra .01%. Thanks in advance. P.S. I think the calipers are the same also. The Vanagon is in a wrecking yard, ready for the crusher and I was told take anything off before then.

i have heard something about different exaust ports, square versus round. not exactly sure, some one else will most likely know more than I.
i say go ahead and get it any way, if its not the right one, someone else would be able to use it.
good luck

The Vanagon engine has a few differences:
1) Square exhaust ports. Unless you swap your heads over, you will need to find 79 ONLY heater boxes. There is 2 styles of 79 ONLY: Fed version and Calif version.
2) You would need to use the 76 fan housing. The dipstick on the 72-79 bay engine goes thru the housing. Vanagon goes in from the top..... and has no provision for the correct dipstick.
3) The Vanagon case has no provision for the crankcase breather on top.
4) The bolt holes for the rear support bar are the wrong size.
Sorry, I can't give you the 0.01% assurance.
It will take a lot of work and $$ to do this swap. The $$ are going to be for the exhaust. |
