Hi folks!, I have a 1600cc dp engine that I'm rebuilding out of my '71 Bus. I was just wondering if these engines are supposed to have a thermostat? I went to look at the bottom right of the engine case where the bently manual says it is located, but no sight of it? is this a bad thing? if I need one, where should I buy one? thanks! |

yes, it needs it. yes buy one. you may have heard it before, but it's there for a reason, as is ALL of the other tin. do your homework. make sure you have all of the pieces, especially the two jammies that fit tween the cylinders. put them in now, you can't do it with the engine installed. |

You need a thermostat, not only does it improve heat output but prolongs the life of your engine. Not many new thermostats around right now but there's plenty in the classifieds. Look at the bottom of your fan shroud where it meets the cylinders for empty screw holes as well, odds are the flaps are missing too. |

Jon, Yes there was a thermostat and flaps in the fan housing.it seems alot of shops yanked them out, since they did not see the reason for putting them back.they come up here in the Ad's from time to time. post a wanted ad. |

thanks for the quick reply everyone. Does anyone by any chance have a picture of one on their engine? I'm just trying to visualize how it goes on. there is a threaded screw coming out of the block in the same area that it is supposed to be, and I'm just wondering if that is where the thermostat is connected? |

I've seen them in the classifieds here for as low as six bucks. They're kind of hard to mess up, so most should be OK. The manual should have a pic of it on the engine, and it tells you how to check it with a hot water bath. |
