looking to build the biggest T4 motor that can be done without spending quite as much as what PAUTER gets for parts. this is going to be in an off road buggy. I know it's gonna be alot of money to do this but wanting to stay aircooled and want around a 3000cc. been looking but can't find what I'm looking for.

There is Jake Raby Aircooled Technology - http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/
Check out from some of his R&D builds that he did with around 3-Litre engines: http://www.rdtlabs.com/aircooledtechnology.htm

Also FAT Performance in Orange, CA builds Type 4 off-road engines as well - http://www.fatperformance.com/

At that level its not gonna be cheap.

All of my engines 2.7L and larger utilize twin spark plugs, EFI and other serious adbvancements that others don't employ and most don't even know exist.

Let the fact be known that size doesn't make power alone. We have learned that the combination of components is the key to usable, effective power thats reliable.

Tyhat said, last week I made 249HP on pump gas (89 octane) from 2.8L with twin plugs. The power was made at only 5,500 RPM and the engine idled at 600 RPM as smooth as stock with throttle response through the roof.

I can certainly design something that will be effective for you, its all I do.

So what are your plans for a motor that big , racing or play? What HP are you looking for ?

plans are doing a score unlimited buggy. gonna have it ready to make a showing in Vegas in July. long travel frame is under construction. any suggestions on what to go with? cc's, cam, turbo? it is gonna be aircooled VW

If it's off road call FAT- no doubt.
Off Road is their specialty and far from being mine. Its very heard to beat a FAT built off road engine.

gonna build the motor myself, just needing to know where and what parts

Well, in that case have you checked out my engine kits? I have a 2.9L kit. You can build it without anything more than a 100 piece tool set.

Look through this presentation in detail.

One of Jakes kits would be the way to go if you tried to put one together your self you will spend more money then needed.

European Motorworks in Hawthorne Ca.

George did all the machining and had all the part on the shelf when I rebuilt my type 4.

Fat performance buys from him.

I'm a Jake Raby customer..

He's an honest guy...

Couple of suggestions.. get a $$$ dollar budget together (as little as possible or "good deal") do not help anyone allocate funds.

Decide what exactly you want it to be like when completed.. there are different types of "power" you can get.

Jake is the type of guy who will help you choose which stock parts you can use.. what should be upgraded.. and what should be canned. Out of respect shop on his site first get an idea what things cost -- He does have a good T4 specific forum -

I've only spent $2k or so with his company - he was instrumental in making right decisions on the T4 EFI bug engine we built.

OVERALL.. before going down the long road.. it's worth while to start by spending the $30 on the video he has with bugme.

Note.. your exhaust will not be cheap.

2nd Note.... you may want to strategize with him on how to use your stock cooling system etc.

Quote: Note.. your exhaust will not be cheap.

Base the engine on what you are willing to spend for EXHAUST. With the TIV you MUST have an effective exhaust and that doesn't mean it has to be "big" and have little restriction... Its all in system design.

If you want 200 real HP the exhaust to create that and keep the engine alive and reliable will cost over 2K.

The TIV is an exhaust dependant engine, until you optimize that sub system the engine will seriously suck and NOTHING will help it.

I understand all of this. I have an aircooled shop and have done a few T4 rebuilds (T1 is a different story  ) but on the T4 side I haven't had anyone that wanted to spend the money to hi-po one. some of the info on your site is very interesting Jake. when would be a good time to call and talk to you? been makin my questions list  you can email me direct if you like at [email protected]

We can set up an appointment to chat about possibilities whenever you want.. This week won't be good for me due to serious deadlines and commitments.

My approach with these engines is different, thats why we get results that were previously only dreams.
