A 1961 with matching numbers, original manual, service booklets and dealer booklet. Came with a nice Sapphire radio, too!

Purchased new in San Antonio, and has been a Texas Beetle all its life.

I also have a L87 61, could you post pics of the interior please!

&Dan Wed Mar 05, 2008 2:08 pm

Thanks!

It's not really that nice, it's the light down here about an hour from sunset....you could make a Yugo look like a Bentley with this golden light.

More pics soon, and you'll get to see I have my work cut out for me with the interior. You have not seen such a bad PO headliner installation in all your days, I assure you.

Looks pretty complete and unmolested from the photos you posted. It is always exciting to see that bugs like that are still tucked away in a few places!

More pics:

Tell me what's not correct here.

Vey cracky wheel, I'll be fixing that. There's PO duct tape under the white cloth.

&Dan Wed Mar 05, 2008 5:55 pm

I had an electro-genius friend troubleshoot the radio, new components are a-comin'.

&Dan Wed Mar 05, 2008 6:01 pm

Under the replacement later-model stuff I found remnants of what appears to be black-and-white plaid upholstery. I didn't know that was stock for '61, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm going to spare you a look at the headliner, trust me it's a furschlugginer mess of epic proportion.

Thanks for looking!

Just finished restoring my wheel. I ground out all the cracks with a Dremel tool and used a goodly amount of JB Weld, which is like working with cake frosting [it's not puttylike- it's gooey and takes forever to set up], followed by a long bout of sand/prime/sand, then about 10 coats of Ford Wimbledon White lacquer [VW used lacquer on their wheels] and a like amount of clear.

The Ford color is a very good match for the VW Ivory.

  That steering wheel was a 61 only "Sandstone" color for L87 cars only, ive been looking for one.....

Notahonda,

You're welcome to my old wheel- it's a cracked up mess, but it's yours if you want it. Take a look at it in one of the pictures. The horn ring rim is missing on the topside. I feared I'd be unable to fix it.

I had a hell of a time finding a wheel to restore, too. I still need to locate the proper horn ring, the one I'm using is a later piece.

For now, the wheel I restored is Ivory, but if need be it can be returned to its stock color. That's the beauty of working with lacquer.
