I'm going to see a '55 bug this weekend and the owner told me 2 things: the pan is original but the seat mounts are different. Also, it has the wrong rear apron, it's not an "H Apron." It also has a 1600.

I'm not a restore freak where everything has to be perfect, I just want an oval to drive around but at the same time be numbers matching and not too hacked up to one day if I decide to I could restore it with 100% right parts for that year on matching pan.... So what is an H apron and is it a huge deal if it's missing one? I know what an apron is, I just don't know what an "H" apron is.

Also, is it a huge deal to change aprons? I mean, would you ever be able to change one and not be able to tell if you took it to a good body shop?

H apron simply refers to the stamping of the metal. In the area that is usually hidden by the decklid, there is a big stamped "H". Its stamped from the back side, so it is a raised area above where the deck lid latches.

here is my beetle with the H apron... notice how it looks as if an H is stamped on the rear.....
