I am starting this post as a reference for 50-67 air cleaners and associated parts. Feel free to add to it.

'50-'52 used the "T" air cleaner

'53 used the "strap" air cleaner. The 1953 air cleaner is open at the top:

There is also another air cleaner, exact usage unknown, that is similar in design but has a wing-nut on top of the air cleaner instead of a strap.

Date stamps:
Air cleaners are often date-stamped. Sometimes in the underside of the bowl, sometimes near the air intake.
One example from an 11/55 36hp air cleaner is below.
Location: Underside of air cleaner top, seen by removing the bowl as if changing the oil

i have owned a couple wing nut air cleaners that have concentric circles on the bottom, as opposed to radial lines. i do not have any pics, i am sure someone does.
anyone know the reason or date that would explain the difference?

I've seen those as well and I think they are Barndoor, maybe 1953?

I have both a 29A and a 261 air cleaner and they appear identical to the above except for the part #.

I have one very similar to the wingnut style, but without the wingnut. The base screws into the top, and has bumps on the interiror which lock onto matching grooves on the top. As you tighten it up, the bump to groove matching gets tighter and tighter until it is secure. I assume it is a late '50's item, and I show it here mounted on my '59 swivelseat engine. Very convenient, but it has no breather intake, which would be nice.

That looks like a normal 36hp air cleaner. I wonder if the engine breaths enough through it?

it's a stale air 40hp shroud. the engine is a later engine, tinned up to look like a '61 stale 40. surely you have seen this bus in person by now and have talked to rick about it, no?

I know it looks restrictive, but it is open around the circmference, and I calculated the open area. Turns out to be bigger than the nozzle opening on the '64-'67 style. Seems to work just fine with my single port 1600. I have the small exhaust exit as well. I guess it could be constipated, but it runs great. Drove it with this setup to Bullibrigade and back in record time this year.

i think there is also a wing nut air cleaner that seperates the tube from the elbow and is the same in all other aspects.dropgates has a good picture of it.

i need a complete wing nut that seperates for my truck if anyone has one...

That one is sweet. The whole setup is just impressive. I like the cutout under the filter section that lets the dust collected fall out of the engine compartment and onto the road. I'd like to put something under there so I can see how much dust it really collects. It's just like the cyclone dust collector in my cabinet shop, only about 40 times smaller :D

This came with my bus and is original. It isn't a cyclone but it is for dusty areas. I am keeping it for the 1600 dp.

I believe that is for the super early trucks, like 1952 only.
