I am hoping that I will get my van ready for the summer...

Changed the fuel lines today, and still trying to get to the figure out issues wt engine/coolant temp, and am hoping that I can get it ready in a month....anyway.

I started a mental list of the tools, spare parts and other useful things I should have in the van when I do take my this thing on my first real trip.

I figure some of you are probably pros at knowing what one should have in case of a problem....

so here is goes....

What do you keep in your van (tools and such)?

I'm no pro but this is some of what I keep in the vanny

under the bench
-the help book limbo give you when you join
-belts
-coil
-spark plugs
-spark plug wires
-cap
-rotar
-O2
-5 gal 20/50
-anti freeze
-tools I use every time I work on the vanny
-wires and such
-fuses
-WD40
-starter fluid
-flash light (the type you shake and last forever)
-hoses and things like that to fix any leaks (I can dream can't I)
-crazy glue
-Tape (you name it and it's there)
-1st aid stuff
-jumper cables/emergency stuff
-manuels bentley and hayne(I suck at spelling)
-tarp and string

The camping stuff gets stuck just about every other place I can fit it

under the seat:

come a long
tow strap
Haynes manual
two 8 inch subs
two 6x9's
Bentley manual

Some more unusual items I have:
Steel tie wire
clear silicone
a few popsicle sticks
a couple straws
some plastic corrugated "cardboard"
many hose clamps and some old assorted pieces of rubber hoses of varying sizes
14v cordless drill with assorted drill bits

The above combined with saws pliers cutters glue, tape etc make a pretty infallible repair kit for most anything that can go wrong. I have a bunch of other random little bits and pieces of junk, they come in handy pretty often.

What kind of seat do you have????

I carry the stock jack and an aftermarket lug wrench. That's it.

being a better Chef than a wrencher I can safely say... I carry five different kinds of flor de sel (hand harvested sea salt from Spain/France), extra virgin olive oil, smoked olive oil, sh&t loads of good wine and kick as$ micro brews... lots of good music... a little dried food and lots of water because I am a better chef than a mechanic.... I may have to wait for help and I like to eat... some kind nugs, incense and toilet paper...

I'm a waaay better mechanic than I am a chef but, I gotta go with aswah on this one.

At least, when I break down (hasn't happened yet) I'll be a very happy camper.

One time I was about 30 miles from pavement in the Medocino National Forest and I woke up and had a flat tire. The problem was, I put on the spare and the tire pressure was very very low. I had no choice but to drive out with a 1/2 inflated tire. I now keep a little air compressor and a tire repair kit under the seat.

bucko...

Just the standard westy rear seat.

Forgot a few things too:

2 50 lengths of rope
extension cord
hand file for the axe
and I'm sure some stuff I forgot.

Oh yea, and my Propex heater.

got lost back in there a few times... last time I almost got stuck going down what looked like an old logging road... then almost ran out of gas getting back to town two days later... love the forest SSSSSOOOOOO many great spots to chill!

aswah

oh, I actually also carry good times with those condiments...

RCB Tue Apr 15, 2008 7:30 pm

I carry most of the spare parts that have been mentioned under the drivers seat and inside the housing of the rear seat but right allong side of me in the passengers seat is the newer Halon2 fire extinguisher.
Cost a few dollars but........................................WTF.
I think everyone should carry one in their vehicle but I also think everyone should have one in their bedroom and the kids bedroom and the kitchen and the basement and in the laundry room and the hall closet and every other room in the house, because a fire can pretty much fuc- up an otherwise nice day.
Travel safe and stay safe :!:

Under the rear seat:

bottle jack, stock jack, jack stand, PROPER tire iron (19mm impact 6 pt socket and 1/2 "bar"), plywood chunk, small Swedish tree saw, jumpers (big gauge wire), hand tools (prob too many!), oil, lube, gas "can", bailing wire, duct tape, spare fasteners, air compressor, hefty strap, extension cord, folding shovel.

I also carry spare parts, a medium sized axe (not hatchet!), bucket, plastic milk carton box, rope, tarp, home made awning, cards, electronic chess game, book, little AM/FM walkman type radio, beer, (like duh! ;) ) sometimes wine, did I mention beer? (mmmmmm....... beeeerrr) Haynes/Muir/Bentleys (dang! I'll need two with the Jetta engine installed!), and stuff I can't recall right now......

Thinking of this stuff makes me miss camping in my Westy!

I miss camping! I want this conversion to run!!

;)
