Awesome Dash!

My brother bought a 68 bug witha blown engine for $50. Didn't notice that it had a Empi GTS on it until he got it home. Sold the steering wheel for $700 I think.

yah I found mine on a pickup bug a guy was selling for like 800 bux, he advertised it as a cheap chinese steering wheel. I offered him $100 for the steering wheel and hurst shifter and sent him a stock wheel and shifter to put back on the car. :D

This one my brother picked up for me at an op shop for $15 AUS. Its an Italian (probably Personal) wheel with a German boss

Nardi Wheel, Luisi boss and Abarth horn button. Feels nice to handle...

I second that question. The PO put a mooneyes red flake one in mine and didn't use a kit.

More than likely a Grant adaptor kit since it has that chrome center horn button. Usually the same kit will work for any of the 5 bolt steering wheel styles. Heather, IIRC, those wheels will not fit on a VW steering shaft without an adaptor kit.

Which one??? :-k

Kelley Sun Apr 20, 2008 8:09 pm

The mounting adaptor kit that Grant sells now fits 3 bolt and 5 bolt steering wheels universally. IIRC, adaptor kit #3568 for the late 74 and up models, not sure what kit# for the earlier models. It has diagrams for both the older 3 bolt mounting style wheels Like the vintage Superior and older Grant/GT classic models use, plus it's used for the more modern 5 bolt mounts like these -

My wife's

and mine

Grant Rally GT's, a less expensive alternative to a popular MoMo steering wheel style.

My metallic orange 3 bolt mount steering wheel -

Sorry for the late reply, but yeah I used the Grant kit. My Mooneyes wheel has the same pattern as the metallic orange wheel that Kelley posted.

One of the interesting things about this post, in addition to the steering wheel variety, is what everyone's done with their gauges. I have '72 Super and am still trying to determine how to place the gauges. Do I use the dash insert panels currently available, do I mount the tach on the dash or under it? That's the beauty of the VW world -- there's no right or wrong way, just the way you decide to do it. To re-emphasize one of the posts, some of these interiors are awesome!

This was on the car when I got it. Says "BRITANNIA" on it.

Ooooh thanks for clarification. So I must have the adapter in there, but the guy didn't put the horn/canceler thing in.

DOES ANYONE OFFER THIS WHEEL AS A REPRODUCTION? I FOUND ONE NEW WHEEL IN CLASSSIFIEDS BUT IT'S FOR A BUS.

I just bought the Interlagos wheel from CIP1

Interlagos 3 spoke

I really like the style, as it kind of looks like the 1973 bug sport wheel, but it's kind of on the small size. It's an 11" wheel, anyone else using a small diameter wheel? How do you like it for normal driving?

thanks

Anyone looking for a 3 spoke woodgrain wheel for their bug?

My choice for replacing the stock steering wheel was a It's a 15" Grant model 1760. with the heavy chrome center ring.

I tried a 13" wheel and found steering the bug tedious. The 15" wheel handle the car nicely.

Here's the finished Install.

Just test fit this in my current build up. 1972 1302. It's a Momo trek

This was the set up in the bug that I just sold. 1974 1303. The wheel is a grant signature something.
