Hi everybody, maybe I have more luck here in the split section !
I´m looking for original old pics from CCG cars and u.s. army split windows stationed in germany in the 50´s.
The ones painted in olive drab (with the white star ).
I need some inspiration for my new project. I ´m also happy with pics from ovals as staff cars !

An olive drab car would have been British, and would not have a white star. Most Beetles sold to G.I.s were privately purchased through their friendly PX (the first privately owned VWs) and would not have had military markings such as stars. The star would have been painted onto captured enemy rolling stock during hostilities to keep from getting blasted by friendly fire.

I´m still hoping to find a photo with an oval from the army, but I´m starting to believe there were only the CCG splits until 1948.
There must be an army oval somewhere ! Didn´t they use the VW´s in the 50´s anymore ?...maybe as a barracks car or for postal service ?

In my search for info from books covering the CCG
period I have found no pix of any cars with fancy or
WWII type marks on CCG period cars, even the
Radclyffe (Used as a staff car by a Brit Colonel)
only had markings like the ones shown above.
Most of the pix showing new CCG period cars show
either no markings or jusr regular military numbers to
keep track of the cars, IBID the pix of damaged cars
to be rebuilt, once in a while a small round insignia
on the middle of the side doors.

The US army "Technical Instructions for base and
field maintenance", HQ European Command, printed
May 1949), show no pix of the outside of the cars,
and use lots of pre 45 pix of details (one shows the
body number 166o4 a 1942 body number I believe).

My guess is that only senior staff had the fancy
insignia, and they probably didn't ride in VWs.

Eric, thanks for the information.
The VW doesn´t have to have the white star or fancy markings. I would be happy with just olive drab semi gloss cars and maybe some numbers on it.
Do you know anything about VW´s at the army in the mid 50´s ??
I know in the 70´s and 80´s they even used VW Busses for the military police in germany .

A friend of mine sent me this one, note the white bumpers. But still , it´s a split and I´m looking for an oval....

Actually in the early 70s my unit had plain old Bugs, no olive drab,
normal colors, ours was a yellow or sand color, and as far as I
remember the ony way to tell that it was military was the license plate.
We had it in case the Russians came over the border through the
Fulda gap and we were supposed to load all the secret docs, in their
file cabinets into the bug and drive like *** to Frankfurt. Fat chance
we were right on the border and as the Germans told us we had a
choice - pour vodka into glasses for the Russian paratroopers ,OR
throw phospherous grenades into the file cabinets, there wouldn't be
time to do both. We would know that the war had started before any
one else. We were an intelligence office.

On the plus side the Germans, who knew what they were talking
about from first hand experience during WWII, said that with the
Vodka and all we would get the prime jobs in the POW camps - ie
Kitchen work (more food and warmth)
Supply (Warm clothing etc) Several of the Germans we worked
with on the border had been POWs of the Russians.

On the question of OvalsI don't have any info on them, and have
not seen any pix of them yet. Sorry.

I have a set of those '55 U.S. forces plates.I got them from an Old man named Mr. Ackerman he told me they were of Himlers 540k Mercedes that he bought from an estate sale and used as personal transport and shipped home .Later he sold to a Sergeant in the 60's.I took this all with a grain of salt.Did a lil resarch and found that Himlers mercedes was owned by former band leader of tonight show and was bought from a sergeant that bought it from a military man in the 60's.Btw I dont want to sell them.I will post a pic when I have time.

there were so many staff cars at the US army in germany ,there must be some or at least one pic from an oval :(
