I thought that it would be cool to add this feature, but I am going nuts trying to figure this out!
I do not have an intermittant setting on my switch, so I added a switch to trigger the I pin on the relay with 12V+.
The Relay is wired so:
15 = 12V+
31 = Ground
53M = low speed from switch
53S = low speed to motor
I = trigger (12V+)
T = open
When I wire the relay as above I have high & low like normal.
With the switch off and the "I" pin triggered the relay clicks and the wipers don't move.
If I trigger the "T" pin I get low speed and 3 wipes after I turn the trigger wire off.
I bought a brand new KAE relay but all it does is give me stuttering wipers - High when activating "I" and slow when activating "T".
:?:
Help?!? |

Hi I have a 77 super beetle and the blinker and wiper switches were deffective. I decided to get the blinker housing and switches off of a 90 scirroco and install it into my 77 beetle. I was succesful in doing so and the best part of it is the wiper switch has an intermittent position built in. I took a .99 intermittent relay and got it to work. The only thing is that when you put the wiper in high or low and then to off, it wont self park. I have included the diagram and would like to know if anyone knows how to get the self park to work via a 5 pin relay or something. Im actually happy with it but if I can get it to self park the I would be even happier.

It's because you have the 53M and 53S arse about face on the relay and you are sending the intermittent signal through the park circuit instead of Low speed.
See my diagram:
just ignore the change over relay, thats so the stock Beetle switch operates the 6 pin watercooled intermittent relay

Thanks for your reply. I assumed the S was for switch and M for motor. When I had it hooked up like that it made the relay chatter. I have two relays and found that one was bad. It may be quite possible that I tried it with the bad relay. ill try swapping the wires using the tested good relay and let you know my results.
Thanks |

It is, but your diagram shows the other way around.
But your main issue is 53e is the park wire and is meant to go straight from the wiper switch to the motor, that supplies the power to park but you;ve got the relay output sending the low speed through that.
You need to run 53 to the relay in place of 53e and the relay output to 53b instead of 53e.
I spent a while nutting out this system so I could adapt it to the beetle intermittent wiper switch. |

I swapped the wires so that 53S is going to the switch and 53M is to the motor and it makes the relay chatter. I have 31 going to chassis ground. Could that be an issue? |

Im a bit confused. I understand 53e from switch goes to 53e of motor. I get lost because there is a 53 on the motor as well as a 53 on the switch. What is the output of the relay 53S or 53M? Does 53 of the motor or the switch go to 53S or 53M? Im sorry for being a newby to wiring.
Switch
53b to
53 to
53e to
Motor
53 to
53b to
53e to
Relay
53m to
53s to
I totally appreciate your patience. |

No worries it can be a bit confusing and I was just missing a reply here and there because it's spread over 2 threads.
Is your car wired up exactly the same as your diagram?
If so you need to change it so that:
53 on switch to 53S on relay
53e on switch to 53e on motor
53M on relay to 53 on motor
All the rest is right. |

Do you mean
53M on relay to 53 on motor because otherwise what do you do with 53b on the switch?
Thanks |

You should be right, there's 7 other people I know of that have wired it the same and its worked fine and probably others that too that haven't come to light yet. |

I wired it exactly like the diagram below and it did not work. I have a 4 position switch out of a scirocco.
Normal function should be:
1st Position, all the way down: Intermittent Wiper
2nd Position: off
3rd Position Low speed
4th position, all the way up: High Speed
Self Park when switched off to 2nd position
-------------------------------------------------------
My first diagram function:
1st Position, all the way down: Intermittent Wiper Working.
2nd Position: off
3rd Position Low speed, working
4th position, all the way up: High Speed, working.
Self park: not working
-------------------------------------------------------
Function with diagram below:
1st Position, all the way down: Intermittent Wiper Working.
2nd Position: off
3rd Position Low speed, not working
4th position, all the way up: High Speed, working.
Self park: not working
Do I need a change-over relay or the wiper motor off the scirocco? |

No you don't need the change over relay, that is only there becuase beetle intermittent switches send a ground signal and the watercooled relays need a positive.
I've never had the chance to play around with a mk2 Golf/Scirocco wiper switch but it shouldn't be doing it different to the other watercooled ones.
Try switching 53M and 53S on the relay around and see if that changes anything but with what it's doing I'd be suspicious of the park function being crook in that scirocco wiper switch.
It may be a relay problem but I doubt it if the intermittent function is working ok.
With the relay at rest you should have continuity between 53M and 53S. |

When I run 53e from switch to 53M on relay and 53e from motor to 53s, everything works except the auto park. When I swap the wires around, it makes the relay chatter and i burn fuses.
I might go to pick n pull this week end to get another switch and while im there, Im going to trace every single wire to see how the factory hooked it up. The diagram I made was taken out of a Rabbit/Scirocco, 80 to 81 Bently manual. They show the 53e wires like my first diagram. Im sure I will figure it out and when I do I plan to take pictures of everything i did to get the scirocco switches in and upload the proper diagram.
Thanks and i will keep you posted. |

Thanks that would be great so I can add a note to my thread just so if anyone else decides to use the mk2 switch gear they know what to change. |
