Hello all,
My cruise control suddenly went out. I checked the vacuum hoses and the pedal switch, they're both good. I have another ECU unit, but I noticed it's a different model number. Anyone know if they're interchangeable?

I'd say the one on the left is for a Syncro and the one on the right is 2wd Vanagon.
The speed sensor spins twice as fast in a Syncro, so a different control unit is needed. The Syncro speed sensor spins a similar speed to various Audis and other VWs so for the Syncro version VW actually borrowed from one of those cars.

| Perfect, just what I suspected. Since I've got a 2wd, the other will go back in the parts box. |

I used the incorrect VW/Audi control unit on my DIY junkyard cruise control system. (see this link: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8094550&highlight=#8094550 ) The only significant difference I could discern was the minimum speed at which the control unit would allow engaging the cruise control. In my case, if I recall correctly, the lowest speed at which my incorrect control module will engage is about 35 to 40 mph, whereas the correct unit would allow engagement at a slightly lower speed.
If 50-plus mph is the lowest speed at which you would use cruise control, then you might just find the Syncro module will work. |
