Hello all, I am in the process of re doing some brakes in a friends 50 he recently bought.It currently has 2 bolt cylinders in the rear and wasted 4 bolt on the front.My question is that he just wants safe brakes in it,so what later parts can I use? The master is also leaking badly.I have heard that stoddard has early 356 cylinders that work? Its all kinda new to me being a 50.I just want it safe but not having to fork out $$$$$$ Thanks for any and all the info.

Correct setup for pre 20 May 1950 is 22mm main and 19mm wheel cylinders all around. The cheapest solution is 22mm Bus main and 19 mm two bolt wheel cylinders from an oval. Should cost about 150 USD if your friend is ok with Brazilian aftermarket parts.

New 19mm Ate main and wheel cylinders cost a bit less than 200 USD each at Stoddard. 4-bolt 19mm repro wheel cyliders from the same place for 80 USD ea.

22-19mm setup was discontinued soon after it´s introduction probably due to bad braking power. 19mm main, 19mm front and 15mm (5/8 = 15,88mm) rears were used for most of splits.

A safer solution is the New Ate 19mm main, 19mm oval fronts and 17mm oval rears. 100 USD for the brazilian wheel cylinders and 200 USD for the ATE main. A good compromize.

A more safer way is 58 -64 complete front brakes and 19mm cylinders on the original -50 brakes in the back, an easy and cheap way to get better brakes on splits and ovals.

Complete front meaning backing plates, drums and one bolt 22mm cylinders?
Safer questionable, cheaper and easier not. Besides the car would not be a split anymore :cry:

But it would stop then, wouldn't it? That's the thing about bolt-on items like brakes. It's easily reversible.

Safer YES, cheaper and easyer yes (at least here in Sweden...) and I cant see that it does any effect on the body at al :roll:
I have had this on my -52 for many years and it works very good.
