I have a 2002 Westy with a grinding sound eminating from the drivers side. I have had the van looked at by two dealers who all state they can not duplicate owners concern. I took the van to a guru and found the final drive is making the grinding noise. This is about a $7000 dollar repair. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Have you had this problem? Why is it so hard to diagnose this problem?

You might want to talk to the folks at German Transaxle. They do the rebuilds for Go Westy.

Digressive question for the unknowing, (me):

Is there a VR6 vehicle that can provide a "donor" tranny for the EV? Tiptronic?

The GW article recommends 15K fluid changes. Is there a oil analysis service that anyone has used to generate particle trends to indicate when the trans is nearing failure?

I considered getting a EV to haul my race car but have very cold feet due to issues like the problems the OP has. I may even, gasp, bail on the VW idea all together and get a E250 for camping and hauling. Not sure if I can give up the teutonic plague yet.

You might want to take a look at the EV Yahoo site. There are extensive threads on the auto trannies and fluids.
