That bike is worth about $50. tops on Craigslist

Here's the ad in case it disappears or in the unlikely event it gets sold:

VW Trek Bike- Collectors item Price: 3K/offers
1997? Trek mountain bike. Special limited edition for VW. I am second owner, i rescued her from original who was riding it!! was riden twice and then i stepped in and cleaned it up and put in storage. Bike is in mint cond. has all decals and not a scratch. has all original parts, down to the reflectors and Continental tires that were used to match the tires that came on the Trek edition Jetta. Also the grips have the VW emblem on them. this is for the serious VW collector that must have it all! this is a RARE find. This is like finding a mint split window in your grandmothers garage! In all my years as a Volkswagen junkie , i have only seen 1 other at a VW car show 3 years ago, and was bought for $4,700.00!
I hate to sell it. I am only selling it to put a Volkswagen in my driveway!! Will ship at your cost.

(Wow, 3 grand and "will ship at your cost"?!)

For 3 grand, can't I get a bike made in Germany?

I wonder what the pop-top version goes for.

foodeater Thu May 15, 2008 7:53 am

You could just buy a crappy trek MTN bike for $25 have it painted at a body shop, and get some stickers made up for another $200 or so and save almost $2800. the dirty little secret of "special edition" bikes is that the manufacturer has no way of knowing which ones are legit, and which arent (no special serial numbers!!!). So they're not really worth anymore that the standard bike. in this case $100-200 TOPS!

Does it come with a Jetta?

Heaven forbid someone actually ride a bike..

Even Gowesty would be embarassed to ask that!

photogdave Thu May 15, 2008 8:26 am

Does this qualify for an abuse report? Those bikes can't seriously be considered collector's items?

I have one that I bought from a friend back in 1996 when he bought the jetta trek.

WOW I had no Idea it was worth so much. I will list mine for 3000.00 just so that I can undersell him BWAHAHAHAHAHA

:)

rblake3 Thu May 15, 2008 9:44 am

wow. That bike is worth 200 bucks maybe. A VW Vortex collector may pay a little more. I wonder how much the Jetta factory roof rack is worth??? Now maybe in another 20 years it may be worth something.

JPrato Thu May 15, 2008 9:46 am

I have the same bike. I'll sell mine for $3,000 AND throw in the bike rack that came with it for FREE!

But to whoever is interested.... I'll have new tires and a tune up on the bike for you... HAHAHAHA

levi Thu May 15, 2008 10:31 am

yeah, but it's got twist grips. I HATE twist grips. Oh well....
Besides, I've already got a maverick ml8 that only cost about half that thing.

brooklynvan Thu May 15, 2008 10:40 am

but what 's the original Mileage?
can I put a subaru or bostig conversion in it?

keithwwalker Thu May 15, 2008 10:58 am

lol, 99% chance that bike was made in the Peoples Republic of China, or Taiwan....

grip shift sucks

I spent half of that and got a way better bike...keep your old treck

RCB Thu May 15, 2008 3:34 pm

Come on, for $3000.00 youd think the seller would ship it anywhere for free. Would shipping it really cut into the profit margin that much.
Heck, you could put it on a Greyhound bus and have it shipped anywhere in the USofA for a few bucks.

[quote"Bike is in mint cond. has all decals and not a scratch."quote]

The VW logo on the front headset is 1/2 rubbed off...I guess it came that way...

Actually I was amazed by the "made in USA" decal clearly visible in the last photo.

So, it's got that going for it. Still not worth 3 grand tho.
