The Classic weekend started for me early Friday morning the 6th of June. I flew in from San Antonio to San Diego bright and early and met up with Russ Canels and his resto custom square. We were quickly off to a local carne asada joint for a burrito breakfast and pickled carrots 8) After we ate and backed into a pole in the parking lot (no T3s were hurt in this bone head act) we were off to the Crown Plazza host hotel for the Classic.

On the way up the I-5 to the Friday events, the squareback died. Here we are just 2 hours into it with our first car issue. I say first as any of us that have done big show weekends like this know and will tell you if "nothing" goes wrong with the car then you need to count your blessings. So out in the early morning coastal sun of barren Camp Pendelton Ca we fixed the BugIns breakdown issues-again. Yep a re-repair job  Nice. After giving Russ a ration of Crap, he secured the distibutor wire once again and we were off.

After driving around Irvine arguing where th hotel was, we got in safe and sound. Later we walked through the parking lot real quick and decided to head over to Lenny Cops West Coast Classic Restoration. Rob Kingsburry was having some last minute details to his car fixed before he had a photo shoot with Kiki of Volksworld. At the open house some of us gatherd for the first time since last year. We took the open house oportunity to "raise Type 3 awareness". Corey-blackdog, Russ C, Richard and his son Alex from Oregon, Scott Taylor, Bob Walton, Rob Kinggsburry and myself. Everret and Jen were there as well but being a rock stars and all kept a low profile  Scott drove the recent aquisiton 62 PizmoBob notchback to the event for me to enjoy the rest of the weekend. The one very cool thing about Lennys get together was that all the old duffers made a showing, grabbed a braut and hung out. Just enough cars and people to be a cool, low key kick off to the Classic Weekend. After the West Coast Classic open house we went to Nicks Burger and Robs VolksWorld shoot.

Stay tuned for more of the T3 SoCal weekend 8) !!!

Rob Kingsburys VolksWorld photo shoot

With time, money and a fierce desire to build the best. After the West Coast open house we followed Rob and Kiki over to an older residential area to shoot Robs car for the mag. Funny thing about this neighborhood was people were walking up and saying-hey another shoot for Lenny? At first I though we were gathering VW people over for a block party?? But then I found out they were the residents! I guess VW people in the area and photo shooting wasnt the first time. Ed Economy was said to live down the street, so maybe that has part to do with it.

Anyway, all smiles as Robs dream came true, well maybe part two  He had his car shot by HVWs in Colorado already  So Bob, wife Kurrrr and myself started in on some brewhahas while they worked. After various angles and moves we got the 3 cars together as well as owner profile pics. Kiki was fun with zztop on hand to help out. Great guys that we would see through out the weekend.

After that we headed over to Nicks Burger and the DKP meet!

Stay tuned for more T3 Classic Weekend!!!

Hey, Jason, nice write-up and photographs! =D>

I sure wish I could have made it to the Classic...

But, I did get to go to one event, and camp in the Squareback. Plus, I now know how well the it runs, even when fully loaded and without proper tire pressure. Also, what I need to fix (Stupid air boot, total junk!).

ah, I miss me some (insert name here)-berto's food! There is a sad knock off here - Rigo-berto's - but they are no Roberto's. or Adalberto's. or Alberto's, or Juanberto's, or Pedroberto's, etc etc.

oh well. we do have $3.70 a gallon gas though...

Oh, so that was you that I was parked next to Russ? Sorry I didn't introduce myself, only saw you for a few seconds here and there. Any particular reason you're selling your square? There seemed to be alot of interest in it.

Russ is like that. Bi-stockual or homo-cusom :? Hes ready for a stock T3 wagon again. The whole thrill of the hunt, keep things fresh kinda thing.

Part of flying in on Friday early was to be able to go to as many things tthe weekend has to offer. One stop my my list has been Nicks Burger in Fullerton. Its the DKP hang out for the club. Its gained popularity due to the clubs longevity and popular resurgence of the Cal Look bug. So after Robs shoot, Bob and I headed over and met up with Scott and Russ. Not much in the way of T3 stuff, but lots of cool things to see all the same. Bob and I spotted the bug version of his T3  Russ spied the VW Trend squareback and I got to see some old speed products. After this Bob Scott and I headed out for some grub. We would be up early the next day for Octo and more VW overload

Yeah I bet it was. I missed seeing everybody. Bloody finals are tough this quarter... physics, calc 2, manufacturing engineering and tech writing for engineers. Looks like everyone had a great time though. Too bad a about adriel's square, but the good news is he has a decent pair of replacement fenders already in the same color. Im back in SD for the summer in 6 days so I'll swing by with gordon or something and see what we can do with it.

I saw that sweet early notch with the german license plate and the red T34 cruising north on the 5 at about 2:30. I figured there was some meet going on. Who is the owner of that notch? It is freaking amazing.

Then I will post here, sir!

I drove up on Saturday, and had some trouble get going (had to put on a new turn signal assembly). I was driving up, when it started surging in the area of Del Mar. Sounded terrible, and tried to exit. I could not, so I pulled over. My rubber air boot had come off, so I thought it was the engine knocking. So, I took my time putting it back on, and tried to drive. When I got to a hill, it stated even worse (no more than a mile, I think). Pull over again, and start thinking. After 15 minutes, I checked the engine, and the heads; still hot, so got back in. Thinking again, remembered the duct taped connection for the fuel pump. Got that set better (but not right because I did not have any female spades) and the valve covers were cold. So, I st out again, and it drove fine.

I decided to go to the B.B.Q. first, but after an hour I could not find it. Called home, and found it on the map. Went on my way, then had the accident. That took at least an hour, and when I tried to leave, Baby would not start. Went and checked the connector, and that was it. Finally got to the B.B.Q., which took longer than I thought (wanted to do another event, and get to camp before dark). Cruised over to the host hotel, and the left back was smoking. The gray haired guy (still cannot remember his name), said it smell of oil. Checked the engine, and it was not it. He and Jack thought it was the transmission. Fixed the air boot, and tried to go on my way. I must have been real tired, because I could not find an exit without the arms. A group of drunk guys got me out the entrance (it too had an arm), and I went on my way.

I got into camp way after dark and my bed time: 22:30! There was a drunken fest going on at the base of the camp (almost ran over a pasted out man! ), so I went to the top level (tried for 15 minutes to get to bed). There, I met some of the VTO people around the camp fire (Lee and ...drat, lost it :? ). Got to bed around 23:30, and woke up at 5:00, never meeting the VTO folks. :( Wanted to be at the hotel at 6:30, and at 6:00 finally was ready. Baby would not start, and the wire had broken. By 7:00 I had that fixed, along with the air boot. I also sliced my fingers trying to cut the harness covering, and was getting annoyed I was gushing blood, especially on the new parts. Got the roll of duct tape, and wrapped my finders (Jack is right I have a duck tape addiction  ). Saw one of the cuts was a few millimeters deep!

Got going, but soon got lost in Silverado...and ran out of gas! Oh, well, I will call Jack. Just then, a SUV came up. I waved it down, and asked were there was gas. She said 25 miles! No cell phone reception either! So, I rode with her on her route, and got to see a different part of the Cleavland National Forest. She look me to the town center, but the pay phone was gone! He husband arrived, and they said they had to go back to their route. I walked around trying to call Jack, but the canyon was too deep.

I thought I had a ride to gas, but something went wrong. I came upon a Ford Explorer in a creek canyon, with a group trying to get it out or watching. Asked a question, and then watched and help too. They got it out, and the owner drove away! Golly, that is Ford tough! The front end and underside were damaged.

Sat around with the folks waiting for the liquor store to open, and that was fun in its self. The store opened, and I called Jack and left him a message. It was around 9:00, B.T.W.. Called A.A.A., and they said they be 45 minutes. Bought a Honey Bun (no Breakfast or food on me and wanted to thank the store owner) and payed the store owner 50 cents. Sat around with the excavator operator and the owner's Father, and felt... different and good. Here I was, in the middle of no where, rocking in front of the main store.

A.A.A. was on time, and he took me out to the Squareback. He said since it was only a gallon and a half, and 25 miles to gas, he would follow me out (one way in and out). That way, I would not have to call again, or have trouble. He did, and I got gas, and called Jack to let him know I was not going to the Classic.

Got to Highway 76, then to Fallbrook. Got gas, and got messages saying that I could not pick up the parts! He asked me to call, but it had been over an hour, and his phone was down. So, I left him a message that I was going to come anyway. Put the air boot back on (came of again), and was on my way. Found the place, and his parents were home. Talked a bit, and the Father showed me the stuff. Mother got the Son, and she arranged it all. In the Squareback I loaded an almost complete engine (missing most of the F.I.), four Type 3 wheels, F.I. gas tank, couple bits of tin, oil dip stick, cams (two unknown and two type 1), 1600 Type 3 cylinders, Type 1 74.95mm cylinders, pistons, and wrist pins (still has honing, but used), and muffler with almost or new upper heat exchangers.

Had a bit of trouble on Interstate 15 with hills, at one point going 35 m.p.h. in a 70m.p.h. zone! Learned next hill to use third gear, and turned on the heater, even though the right side does not work. Also learned that I could go all the way up to 55m.p.h. in third gear! Tryed getting onto Highway 67, but had trouble, and the maps were buried!

So, got back on Interstate 15 at Scripps Ranch, and took Interstate 8. Got home fine. I have tried getting the engine apart, but the thing is got some really rusty parts. Plus, there is little room for me to work on it. Joe, maybe you can help, please. [-o<

All and all Baby just purred along. I could easy stay with traffic, and shifting was a dream knowing I could go to 30 m.ph. in fourth (Owner,s manual) The only thing was, I had trouble hearing, and still have a touch. Golly, the engine is loud! What!
