Im new to owning a bug. I believe this is a 1600 sp not sure though or what carb is on it. The bug starts a little rough than warms up and goes.

Recommendations on where to go first? Do I consider changing the Dist / Coil? What about the carb rebuild or replace? This is in a 68 and will need to pass smog in Nevada, funny its not required in California where I bought it.

Nice find!
so first off there should be a brand like SOLEX and some numbers on you carb. right on the left (drivers side) where the float is.
it looks like a solex 30-3, but from your pic who could really tell.
also I'd say your right, should be a single port and looks that way from the intake.
You dist. is tricky... but whay do you need to change anything if it runs? i only ask because it seams you should just do a tune up, points, plugs, condencer, rotor, cap, plug wires, oil chang and valve adjustment.
as far as emissions... do you have the altitude adjuster bolted to the drivers side inner fender in the engine bay? if so you are missing the vacume idler arm bracketry that boltes in between your carb and intake. Look for some plumming and a charcoal breather under you passenger side rear fender. That stuff is stock.
If your missing all that stuff... its ok, just get her tuned up and run with it. I cant believe you have to pass emissions in a 30 year old car, but you can do it, just keep her tuned.
Congrats on the good score!

Your distributor vacuum advance is connected to the wrong port on that carby. There should be a spigot facing left (as looking at the pic) on the left hand side of the carb.

I'd also read Glutamodo's post about carbs/distributors to see if you have a gross mismatch on your donk.

The carburetor looks like a 34/3 to me, and the distributor vacuum line looks like it's connected to the retard port. It should be connected to the port on the left side of the carburetor next to the idle solenoid. Block off the retard port. It may run fine like this, but you wont have the benefits of using the SVDA like it should be. This config will probably allow it to run like a 009, at best, which is to say, less mileage and less smooth acceleration on takeoff. Some folks will tell you that their car runs fine with a 009, and that may be true. But,,,, I'll bet they've never tried anything else.

Agreed, looks like a 34/3

I third that (34 Pict 3 carb)- Looks like a nice engine and some decent parts. As mentioned - do your valves, get the vac port in the right place. Then set the timing correctly. If you can see the model number on the distributor, that will help, but it looks like a relatively new 034 style. All of which is a pretty standard combination.

go here for adjusting your carb properly

http://www.vw-resource.com/carb.html#30

I think that once you are done, you will be pleasantly surprised how well it will run.

Thanks for the help.

The carb is a solex 30 / 3. Distributor I know the cap part is 123552056, which I believe is the 009, got the wrong condensor for it as I need a round plug for the contact insert for the points and the one I got came square (BOSCH) made in germany not mexico.

The vaccum port I will change to the side next to the idle screw.

Newer SVDA distributors use the same cap as the 009 so that won't tell you anything, but since it has a vacuum advance can you know its not an 009. The numbers on the distributor should be on the back side. A mirror on a stick will help you get them.

Wrong, there is a vacuum advance 009 distributor. On the other hand, the majority of 009's out there are mechanical advance.

You may have to use a shop rag to clean dirt off to see the numbers stamped in the distributor's side body.

Never knew that. The Old Volks Home website actually lists two. You never hear (read) anyone talking about them...

Hey I was right! not to brag, but...

anyway- Your dist resembels the cheap SVDA that CIP1 sells. It dosent work too well with that carb, (advance curve is wrong) but it will work if you tune it for your most common driving habbit. Me, I drive 45-70 mostly, so i have my advance set for that condition, where as at Idle, it runs a little ruff but screams on the highway, and gets good mileage.
If it is the cheap one form CIP1, or some other company, that is the same set up im running. your best bet is to get the correct Vacume dist to run with that carb. The dist is cheeper than a new carb or dual carb set up. but you can tune it the way it is and drive the crap out of it!!!

What distributor should be run with this carb and single port 1600 other than the muffler I know no other mods to this motor? I will check the back to know for sure what dist it is saw the made in mexico on the front. The lobes are worn inside almost defeats the points, rotor and cap

volkenstein Mon Jun 16, 2008 3:34 am

fastphin,
SVDA from Aircooled.net that has been reworked for the H30/31.
The 30/31 has a weak vac signal.

Alright after using the wifes makeup mirror which did not work I bought a mirror that got between the header and the distr
Bosch 0231 146 101 is the part #

Next problem is the parts store wants to sell me 009 parts which I already know the condensor male end will not fit being its a round hole and the part is square.

2002sportside Mon Jun 16, 2008 2:26 pm

0231146101 translates to a Bosch 0231 170 034 (VW 113 905 205AL). It should use these parts.

According to the Old Volks Home webpage that distributor was originally used in 1970 Autostick models...

Thanks for all your help. Changed everthing but I think I have the timing off as it drives likes its running out of gas struggling. Cant find my light to set the timing back to the store tomorrow.

so if you changed "everything" What carb and Dist set up did you go with?

Justin.

fastphin Tue Jun 17, 2008 3:21 pm

Let me rephrase I replaced the points, cond, rotor, cap, plugs, wires, adjusted the valves and changed the oil.

Looking up how to test the coil. I set up my meter and got nothing, not sure if its my error as the car ran shouldnt there be something?

I am looking into replacing the dist from one at aircooled for the H30 / 31 carb
