Hi all,

I've been thinking of adding a auxillary battery to my '71 westy and I just found a Surepower isolator on sale. Thing is i can't figure out if its gonna work on my system. I have a stock system down to the generator with external regulator. All they talk about is alternators.

I checked the past post on the subject and couldnt find anything about generators. anyone have any insight on this?

I could be terribly, terribly wrong, but as far as I know, once the voltage/current leaves the source, ie. alternator, generator, it becomes moot what the prime mover was?? So, if your isolation "valve" works at all it shouldn't make any dfference where the power/load comes from.::

I can't comment on the surepower, but the relay I installed last year from German Supply was easy and works well.

Make sure you have the right Surepower isolator. It should have three large terminals, and one small terminal. the model is designed for Bosch alternator with an internal regulator, but there's a way to use it with an external regulator
The three Large terminals- Connect it the common way - the middle one to the alternator output, and the other two- one to each battery.
now the tricky part- you have three wires between the alternator and the regulator. one is a red wire. cut the red wire on the alternator end of it (and isolate the pare connected to the alternator), and reconnect it to the small terminal on the isolator. (It will now be connected between the isolator "reference voltage" terminal to the D+ terminal on the regulator). make sure that the blue wire going from the regulator to the charging light is still there (connected to the same terminal).

Everything described here- is the way the isolator is installed originaly in my '78 reviera.

Forgot to write- :oops: - It is connected in a very similiar way in older vehicles with a generator- the important part is getting either an isolator without a "reference voltage" terminal (this will be the fourth terminal) or getting one like mine, but not using the fourth terminal.

Im still a little confused on this I have a rebuilt 80amp motorola alternator with a external regulator. I would like to hook up the 4 post isolator. I think i just need to clarification on what goes where... here is what im working with... thanks in advance
