Hello, 1964 bus. I was following the accelerator thread and thought I would check my transmission for rubbing marks. Sure enough the accelerator cable is rubbing against it. Whats the fix? file down tranny. Bend cable. bend guide tube?

The original guide tube is flexible type the will not "bend" and hold the same position. As I can not find may original tubes I use old fuel hose myself. With the "sleeve" it will not "cut" into the tranny.

Um well if there is supposed to be a rubber guide tube then I dont have that. Ive always had issues with the throttle not returning enough. I put a spring up front the keep the pedal at maximum.

Yeah there should be a tube, I missed getting an accelerator cable bowden tube at the OCTO by seconds. That would solve the problem.

i'll second using the fuel line. until you get a bowden tube push a piece of 1/4 inch line onto the cable tube, works fine. good use for older fuel line you have replaced on your bus.

Well I looked at the cip1 tube...19.95. 25 bucks minimum order. If there is a place that sells one that I can order with out having to order extra shit that would be great

I think that's a standard West Coast Metric part, if you have an import shop in the area, they could order it for you and save on the shipping.

why yes I do have a local import store. And if your lucky, they might actually be able to get a vw part for you. You would think they would be able to get you a long block....nope. I will have to go to the next town over to get the tube ..if they have it.

I just went to Lowe's and got some tubing that was just barely big enough for the end of the throttle cable to pass through. It was 1/4" nylon if I remember correctly. Don't really remember. I bought it like 5 years ago. The shortest length they sold was like 25 feet, but I've been slowly using it up on random stuff for the past 5 years. And I think it was only like 5 or 10 bucks, too. It's not the correct part, but it essentially does the same thing and has worked fine for me so far.

That's basically what I did - I found some black somewhat-flexible PVC tubing just a bit bigger than the end of the acc. cable end. stuck one end of the tube in the metal outlet where the cable comes out of the body. Works just fine...

I used a bit of metal brake line... can pick it up anywhere... and if you are missing the piece that goes thru the fan shroud as well, pick up a piece of the next size down as well, and when you cut off the end to make it the right length, it will slip right inside the other for a nice snug fit... of also, the larger size i used to route it around the trans fit perfectly over the tube coming out of the frame as well.... on the downside... it is not flexible... i don't know how important it is that this is a flexible tube... i like the metal line since it can be slightly bent to ensure it doesn't rub on anything...

Which thread were you watching about accelerator cables? I want to read it.

...And does anyone have a pic of what the wire mount looked like on the earlier trannies? I did a search, but I am mostly computer dysfunctional.

It was rubbing so I put on the wire clip. Then I added the tube and just left the clip there with tye-wraps which kept the tube from sagging. Normal would be the accelerator wire going through the clip by itself.

Gave a first try at installing my Bowden tube today. it's incredibly tight (and dirty).
