I decided i needed to change my trans fluid on my '69 westy today so i headed down to NAPA for some GL4 trans fluid. They didn't have GL4 Stalube in stock but they did have their own "NAPA Premium Performance Gear Oil sae 80w-85w-90" in quarts. on the back it states "API services GL-5, GL-4, Gl-3" I bought but now i'm having second thoughts adding it to my bus. should i return it and order Stalube or figure it's safe to use?

Return it and order the CORRECT GL-4 ONLY.

Top right corner, group 34, GL-4 ONLY:

Group 39 is GL-5 ONLY, just for the differential section of the auto transaxle.

READ this thread. ALL of it. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2...t=gear+oil

ok i returned the oil and found the gl-4 stalube at another NAPA store. changed my fluid and i still have a noticeable noise when cruising, a kinda soft "che, che che" with a lumpyness to it. it is only under load cruising along that can hear it, though it may be heard at lower speeds, i don't know because the engine is usually louder. i don't think it's bearing b/c i know the sound they make and i tested them by turning off straight lines. i then tested the CV's by turning in circles and found that my right cv clicks. got under the bus and i feel side to side (joint to joint) motion as well as some play when trying to roll just the shaft. could this be it? the only source of that annoying sound?

Bummer, I was told using GL4 would fix all problems.

And if you believe that, you must be a shareholder in this: http://www.drivewater.org/index3.htm

Only thing said was GL-4 is the correct gear oil to use, no one said it was a magic healer :)

A noise can be lumpy?

Well i guess it sort of feels lumpy!?!? like something is rotating uneven.

My NAPA was having a sale on Sta-Lube GL4 in gallon size. $16ea 2 weeks back. I cleared them out, as I have a nasty feeling it may not be about forever.
