There is a hose on the right side of the engine fan housing that runs to the charcoal canister ( I think its a charcoal canister).........anyways, mine is split where it goes over the barb on the housing and won`t stay on..........
any effects performance wise with this off?

Just cap the nipple on the fan shroud. I removed the charcoal canister and hoses years ago.

The canister is there for emissions purposes...having a working system really has no affect on engine performance, and prevents raw gas fumes from venting to the atmosphere. Up to you, but I restored the system on both my bugs. New hose is available, I think this is the stuff...

IMO the one in the trunk is a different story. Even if it is well past its prime, it still allows the gas tank to 'breathe'. Just replace all the hoses up there once in a while... There is a thread somewhere on rebuilding one of those.

IMO the one in the trunk is a different story. Even if it is well past its prime, it still allows the gas tank to 'breathe'. Just replace all the hoses up there once in a while... There is a thread somewhere on rebuilding one of those.
I still have mine in the trunk.

I too have the one in the trunk....

You got some petrified hose up there...

I had to do mine in the trunk, the gas smell was getting bad. The filler neck hose wasn't the problem, it was all the other stuff. In the end it was worth going to a show and buying some of everything to get it fixed. Just need to replace or regut the canister someday...

The canister in the trunk is just a hollow expansion chamber (2). It allows your gas tank to "breathe".

The canister in the wheel well is an evaporative emission canister (1). It allows the rest of us to breathe.

I will have to agree with you that, at a glance the underside appears to have the attraction of a red-headed stepchild, but I dare say whatever this glitch is that has been pasted over 95% of the underbody componants has done what it was intended to do.
With the exception of the front left fire-wall area and heater channel in that same area where I have recently found out was the fault of a drain tube running through the hole in the trunk........its been effective.
Ugly?..yes, effective.......so far it seems as though it has been.
I took a plastic putty knife and scraped away some of the junk and this is what it reveals..........everywhere that I have scraped little areas off prior to purchase for inspection purposes has revealed the same bright orange paint or in the areas that WERE shiny black, are still that way.
Even on outside end areas that typically get rusted first were covered and have shiny orange under the coating.
So yeah, it is ugly for sure but its one of the reasons I bought the car.
I looked at several cars and this one was the best in terms of hiding 'the good stuff'......
I just wished whomever ran that fresh air box drain , hadn`t of done it down onto the front left portion of the chassis head.

Pehaps one day when the body comes off to do the firewall and portion of channel, I will scrape it all off and then recover with some sort of rust protection like a por-15 or rust bullet....but til then I`ll put a hand to it as I would that very same red headed stepchild. :lol:

I think it was last year (or the year before) that I replaced all the hoses in the trunk. I recall I had a real hard time finding the right size ones to fit the different connections.
I'm pretty sure I needed 14mm hose for the tank to filler neck segment and 4mm or 4.5mm hose (not 3.5mm) for the emission/fuel vapor runs.
And while I wanted to replace the "white" nylon tubing that runs under the cowling, I could never find a source. I ended up reusing what I had.

I think I bought the hose from Wolfgang Int., but now I can only see 4.5mm hose on their website.

Nice to see the actual hose is available. I don't even remember what I used there... either breather hose or rubber line from AZ. I think I just bought about four feet of everything the guy had and used whatever fit. Wasn't much info on it back then...
